Surat: India’s diamond industry is poised for a major boost with the inauguration of the country’s largest Special Notified Zone (SNZ) ‘Surat International Diatrade Centerde’ dicated to rough diamond auctions.

This state-of-the-art facility, spanning an impressive 4,500 square feet, will be officially unveiled at the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) on December 17th in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This marks a significant shift from the previous SNZ located at the Gems and Jewellery park in Ichhapore. The industry’s booming demand necessitated a larger and more modern space, ultimately leading to the relocation to the SDB.

“The SNZ at Surat Diamond Bourse is India’s largest SNZ for rough diamonds,” said Vipul Shah, Chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). “This was a dream conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and it will revolutionize the way rough diamonds are traded in our country.”

The SNZ boasts cutting-edge infrastructure designed specifically for international-standard rough diamond auctions. It features 15 dedicated cabins, each offering a spacious 115 square feet for optimal viewing and inspection. High-security takes center stage, with a dedicated Monitoring room equipped with overnight vault facilities and biometric locks. Each cabin is further equipped with independent weighing balances, UV lights, daylight lamps, and other essential tools to facilitate seamless transactions.

The Special Notified Zone (SNZ) plays a pivotal role in the Surat diamond industry, especially concerning the sourcing of rough diamonds.

SNZ is a designated area where international traders and manufacturers can import rough diamonds for examination, sorting, and auction without paying duty or adhering to formal customs clearance procedures. Surat, a bustling hub for diamond cutting and polishing, benefits significantly from SNZ due to its vital role in the global diamond trade.

For the Surat diamond industry, SNZ serves as a crucial avenue for the procurement of rough diamonds. Rough diamonds, sourced globally, arrive at SNZ facilities where they undergo meticulous examination and sorting processes. This allows traders and manufacturers in Surat to assess the quality, size, and potential value of these rough diamonds before making purchasing decisions.

The absence of duties and strict customs clearance formalities within SNZ facilitates a streamlined process for diamond traders. It enables them to efficiently inspect and evaluate rough diamonds, select the most suitable ones for their manufacturing needs, and subsequently transport them to Surat for cutting, polishing, and further processing.

Moreover, SNZ fosters an environment conducive to auctions and trading activities. International sellers and buyers convene within these zones, conducting auctions and negotiations for rough diamond transactions. This creates a marketplace where Surat-based traders can access a diverse range of rough diamonds from various sources across the globe.

The industry is abuzz with anticipation for the Prime Minister’s visit and the official inauguration of the SNZ. Sources close to the matter confirm that PM Modi is expected to grace the occasion and mark this momentous occasion for India’s diamond trade.
