Gujarat Heat Rises as Rain Break Deepens; Light Showers Likely Till Sept 10

AHMEDABAD: The monsoon’s prolonged pause has brought an unexpected spell of summer-like heat and humidity to Gujarat, with temperatures climbing across the state even as the region continues to await meaningful rainfall. Bhavnagar recorded the highest temperature at 36.3°C on September 3, while Ahmedabad registered 33.8°C.

The dry spell has also widened concerns over rainfall deficiency. Gujarat has received around 15% less rainfall than its average, while Saurashtra is facing a sharper 35% deficit, according to the weather data.

Despite the heat, the India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall at isolated places across several parts of the state until September 10.

South Gujarat districts, including Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Dang, Narmada and Chhota Udepur, are likely to receive light to moderate showers at a few places during the coming days. Scattered rainfall is also possible across North Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch.

However, there is currently no warning of heavy rainfall in the state.

The prevailing weather pattern is being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas. The system is expected to move west-northwest towards the border areas of south Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh over the next 24 hours.

The monsoon is also expected to remain active over Gujarat due to a trough extending from the Arabian Sea across the state.

For Ahmedabad, generally cloudy conditions are expected over the coming days, with chances of light rain. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8°C and a minimum of 25.8°C.

Since June 1, Ahmedabad has received 595.7 mm (23.45 inches) of rainfall.

The Meteorological Department said there is no major change expected in Ahmedabad’s weather over the next eight to nine days.

While scattered showers may provide some relief from the humidity, the absence of widespread heavy rain means Gujarat’s rainfall deficit is likely to remain a key concern as the monsoon season progresses.
