Indian Army Launches Official Instagram Fact Check Account to Counter Deepfakes and Misinformation

In a significant move to combat the growing spread of misinformation and AI-generated deepfake content, the Indian Army has launched an official Instagram Fact Check account, @indianarmyfactcheck, to provide verified information and swiftly counter false narratives targeting the force.

Announcing the initiative on Thursday, the Indian Army said the new account will serve as its dedicated platform for debunking misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, and AI-generated deepfakes related to the Army.

The official announcement urged citizens to stay vigilant against misleading content circulating on social media and rely only on verified sources for defence-related information.

“Be Aware and Stay Alert. Verify before you amplify. Trust only official sources. Stand with truth,” the Army said while introducing the new initiative.

According to the Army, the @indianarmyfactcheck account will publish verified updates, issue swift rebuttals to fake claims, and expose manipulated videos, fabricated images, and misleading narratives designed to spread confusion or undermine public trust.

The launch comes amid increasing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create convincing deepfake videos and digitally manipulated content. In recent months, several fake videos and fabricated statements falsely attributed to senior Indian Army officials have surfaced online, many of which were amplified by Pakistan-based propaganda accounts.

Earlier this year, the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit debunked multiple AI-generated deepfake videos falsely claiming to show senior Indian Army leaders making controversial remarks. Officials confirmed that the videos had been digitally manipulated and urged citizens not to share unverified content.

The Indian Army said the new Instagram account is part of its broader effort to counter foreign propaganda, prevent the spread of fake news, and ensure that accurate information reaches the public quickly.

The Army has appealed to citizens, media organisations, and social media users to verify information before sharing it online and to depend only on official government and Indian Army communication channels for authentic updates.
