Mumbai | Maharashtra — As the global diamond community gathered in Mumbai, the message was clear: the future of natural diamonds depends on trust, transparency and shared responsibility. The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 concluded under India’s chairship, bringing together governments, industry leaders and civil society for four days of intense deliberations on strengthening the global diamond ecosystem.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal welcomed the successful conclusion of the meeting, highlighting India’s pivotal role in the diamond value chain.
“India recognises the vital role of the Kimberley Process in ensuring that natural diamonds remain a symbol of trust, responsibility and shared prosperity,” he said, reaffirming the country’s commitment to advancing the 3Cs — credibility, compliance and consumer confidence.
India, the world’s largest centre for diamond cutting and polishing, used its chairship to push for stronger transparency and cooperation in an industry that supports millions of livelihoods across producing and consuming nations.
Focus on Trust and Transparency
Held under the theme of the 3Cs, the intersessional meeting saw working groups and committees discuss monitoring systems, governance, statistics, technical processes and artisanal mining. A central goal was to strengthen operational mechanisms and build confidence across the natural diamond supply chain.
KP Chair 2026 Suchindra Misra emphasised the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility.“Trust remains the foundation of the natural diamond trade. The progress achieved reflects our collective commitment to keeping the Kimberley Process credible and relevant in a rapidly evolving global marketplace,” he said.
The meeting also highlighted the need to improve communication and outreach so consumers better understand how the Kimberley Process supports responsible sourcing and community development in producing nations.
Protecting Millions of Livelihoods
Officials stressed that the natural diamond industry plays a critical economic and social role worldwide. Ensuring transparency and ethical sourcing is essential not only for consumers but also for the millions of workers and communities dependent on the trade.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, created under a United Nations resolution in 2000, aims to prevent conflict diamonds from entering legitimate markets while promoting responsible sourcing.
Looking Ahead to New Delhi Plenary
The discussions in Mumbai will now feed into the Kimberley Process Plenary scheduled to take place in New Delhi later this year. India reiterated its commitment to strengthening global cooperation and ensuring the diamond industry remains sustainable and trusted.
