Amreli | Gujarat — In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across Gujarat, a two-year-old child from Jaswantgarh village in Amreli district was almost dragged away by a stray dog before being rescued by his alert father. The disturbing incident was caught on CCTV and is now going viral on social media, sparking public outrage over the growing menace of stray dogs in the region.
According to local sources, the toddler, belonging to a migrant family living near the Biocoal Factory on Randhia Road, was playing alone in the courtyard of his house when a stray dog lunged at him. The animal grabbed the child in its jaws and began to run away. Miraculously, the child’s cries alerted his father, who rushed out with a shovel, chased the dog, and successfully rescued his son.
“The moment I heard his scream, I ran out. I didn’t think — I just picked up the nearest thing and chased after the dog. I was terrified he wouldn’t survive,” the father, who did not wish to be named, told The Blunt Times.
The child was immediately taken to Chital hospital and, fortunately, only sustained minor injuries. However, the emotional trauma and terrifying visuals of the incident have left the village in fear and disbelief.
The viral CCTV footage shows the dog attacking and dragging the child in a matter of seconds — a scene that villagers say could have ended in tragedy had the father not acted swiftly.
This is not an isolated incident.
Just four days ago, four people were attacked and injured by a stray dog in Bagasara city. A few months earlier, another child in Jaswantgarh was seriously mauled by a dog. Villagers claim that despite repeated complaints to authorities, no effective action has been taken.
“First it was lions and leopards. Now even dogs are turning violent. Are we not safe in our own homes?” asked Bhavesh Limbasiya, a resident of Jaswantgarh. “The administration needs to wake up before another child is killed.”
Amreli is already known for frequent wild animal incursions, especially lions and leopards that prey on livestock and sometimes attack humans. The addition of stray dog attacks has added a new layer of fear to everyday life in villages like Jaswantgarh, Chital, and Bagasara.
Animal control measures, villagers say, are either nonexistent or grossly inadequate. With growing urbanization, abandoned pets and increasing garbage in rural-urban fringes have led to an unchecked stray dog population.
“This isn’t just about dogs. It’s about public safety and the failure of basic civic administration,” said an NGO worker from Amreli. “We need sterilization drives, better waste management, and urgent action.”
