Surat | Gujarat —- In a major milestone for urban transport, the first trial run of the Surat Metro has begun on an 8.5-km stretch between Dream City and Althan Tenement Station, just as the city prepares for upcoming civic elections. The long-awaited test run has sparked excitement among residents who have endured years of traffic congestion and construction disruptions.

The metro project, officially inaugurated on January 18, 2021, is now entering a decisive phase, with authorities promising full-fledged operations by June 2026.

A City Waiting for Relief

For years, residents of Surat have struggled with traffic bottlenecks and road diversions caused by metro construction. The start of trial runs has renewed hope for a modern and efficient public transport system.

“This is the moment citizens have been waiting for. The metro promises faster travel and relief from daily traffic chaos,” said a senior project official.

Local traders and commuters, many of whom faced business losses during the construction period, are now eagerly awaiting the project’s completion. “Five years of inconvenience will finally translate into long-term benefits,” said a shopkeeper near the corridor.

Political Spotlight Ahead of Elections

The timing of the trial run has added a political dimension to the project. With municipal elections approaching, infrastructure development is expected to dominate campaign narratives.

Political observers believe the ruling party will highlight the metro as a symbol of rapid urban development, while opposition parties are likely to question delays and the hardships faced by citizens during construction.

“This project has become both a development milestone and an election talking point,” a political analyst said.

Routes, Corridors and Timeline

The Surat Metro will operate in phases across two major corridors spanning 40.45 km:

Dream City to Sarthana – known as the Diamond Corridor

Saroli to Bhesan – known as the Textile Corridor

Authorities confirm the trial run follows over 500 hours of rigorous safety and technical testing.

“This trial is a crucial step toward delivering a modern and convenient transport network,” a Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation official stated.

Driverless Technology and Smart Features

One of the biggest highlights of the project is its driverless train operation system. Each metro train will consist of three coaches and operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

The trains will feature:

CCTV surveillance and fire detection systems

Real-time monitoring technology

Interiors inspired by Gujarat’s culture and Surat’s identity

Design themes will incorporate elements from the diamond industry, Garba traditions and the city’s renowned textile sector.

Hope for a Modern Future

As the first metro glides across the viaduct, the city sees a glimpse of its future. Residents believe the project will redefine daily commuting and support Surat’s rapid growth.

“The metro is not just transport — it’s a symbol of Surat’s transformation into a global city,” said a civic leader.
