Ahmedabad, Gujarat – A two-day-old newborn in Ahmedabad is battling COVID-19 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sola Civil Hospital, sending a chilling reminder that the virus continues to pose a threat, even to the most vulnerable. This distressing case emerges amidst a concerning uptick in coronavirus infections across Gujarat, with Rajkot and Surat also reporting fresh clusters.

The infant’s mother had tested positive for COVID-19 last week, although her recent report has come back negative. Doctors believe the child contracted the virus perinatally. Due to being underweight, the newborn is receiving specialized care from a team of expert doctors in the NICU. “The child’s condition is being closely monitored, and we are providing the best possible treatment,” stated a Sola Civil Hospital official, who preferred to remain anonymous given the sensitivity of the case. “Such cases underscore the need for continued vigilance.”

Adding to the worries in Ahmedabad, an 8-month-old child at Asarwa Civil Hospital is also COVID-19 positive and on oxygen support due to underlying health complications. This highlights the varied impact of the virus, particularly on young children with pre-existing conditions.

Meanwhile, the city of Rajkot is experiencing a sudden and significant surge in cases, with 8 new infections reported on Friday alone, bringing the total tally to 24. A staggering 19 cases have emerged in the last three days, putting the local health department on high alert. The new cases include two women and six men, prompting intensified testing and contact tracing efforts.

“The rapid increase in cases in Rajkot is a serious concern,” admitted a senior official from the Rajkot Municipal Health Department. “We are working on a war footing to contain the spread. Our teams are actively tracing contacts and ensuring patients in home isolation receive necessary medical advice and assistance. We urge citizens to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols.” The majority of the 24 confirmed cases in Rajkot, 23, are in home isolation and reported to be stable, with one patient already recovered.

In Surat, four more COVID-19 cases were identified on Thursday, involving individuals aged between 44 and 75. Two of these patients have a travel history, underscoring the potential for external transmission. All four new patients in Surat are currently under home isolation, with their close contacts remaining asymptomatic. Samples from these individuals have been sent for genome sequencing to the GBRC, Gandhinagar, in line with government guidelines. Surat has now recorded a total of nine cases, with two patients currently hospitalized and in stable condition.

Public health officials across the state are reiterating the importance of preventive measures. Citizens are strongly advised to wear masks, maintain social distancing, practice frequent handwashing, and avoid crowded places. Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms is urged to get tested immediately and seek medical advice. “The situation is under continuous review,” stated a health department spokesperson, “and stricter measures will be implemented if the need arises. Public cooperation is paramount in curbing this renewed wave of infections.”
