Gandhinagar : The Gujarat forest department has unveiled an ambitious plans to elevate the Barda sanctuary region into a bustling tourist destination, with a strategic initiative to translocate over 40 lions from the renowned Sasan Gir sanctuary. This transformational project aims to leverage the sanctuary’s pristine natural beauty and rich wildlife to create a vibrant tourist circuit, complete with open jungle safaris and historical landmarks.

In a bold move to diversify Gujarat’s tourism landscape, the state forest department, in collaboration with the tourism department, is set to embark on a transformative journey to develop the Barda sanctuary region into a major tourist hub. This initiative comes as part of a comprehensive strategy to expand tourism beyond traditional hotspots and unlock the untapped potential of the state’s natural treasures.

The Barda sanctuary, spanning approximately 200 square kilometres, has long remained underutilized in terms of tourism potential. However, with its lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and rich historical heritage, it presents an ideal canvas for tourism development. Forest and Tourism Minister Mulu Bera emphasized the significance of Barda as an alternative habitat for wildlife, particularly Asiatic lions, highlighting existing breeding centers for herbivores like Sambar and Cheetal, as well as a thriving population of wild boars.

“For decades, Barda has been identified as a viable alternative to the Sasan Gir sanctuary, home to the iconic Asiatic lions. With our comprehensive infrastructure and abundant wildlife, Barda is poised to emerge as a premier wildlife tourism destination,” stated Minister Bera.

The proposed tourist circuit within the Barda sanctuary will span approximately 50 square kilometres, featuring attractions such as open jungle safaris and historical sites like Kileshwar and Ghumli. This immersive experience will offer visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, providing a unique opportunity to explore Gujarat’s natural wonders.

Central to the tourism development plan is the translocation of lions from Sasan Gir to Barda sanctuary in a phased manner. This strategic move aims to enhance wildlife conservation efforts while creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem. Additionally, efforts will be made to integrate Barda sanctuary with adjacent tourist attractions, such as the Porbandar Bird sanctuary, to offer visitors a comprehensive tourism experience.

“We envision the Barda sanctuary as a key component of the tourist circuit connecting Porbandar to Somnath. By leveraging the region’s natural beauty and historical landmarks, we aim to attract tourists and foster economic growth in the surrounding communities,” remarked Minister Bera.

Looking ahead, the forest and tourism department is committed to unveiling more tourism projects aimed at further enhancing Gujarat’s tourism infrastructure. With a focus on sustainable development and conservation, these initiatives seek to position Gujarat as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
