Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Senior Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat has been appointed as Additional Director General (ADG) in the Special Protection Group (SPG), one of India’s most prestigious and sensitive security organizations. The appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), marks a significant milestone in Bhagat’s distinguished policing career and is being viewed as a matter of pride for Gujarat’s police force.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the proposal for Bhagat’s appointment was cleared following recommendations from the Office of the Secretary (Security) under the Cabinet Secretariat. He will serve as ADG in the SPG from the date he assumes charge until May 20, 2027.

To facilitate the appointment, the post currently held by Bhagat has been upgraded to the rank of Additional Director General on a personal basis with immediate effect.

A 1998-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Bhagat has served in several key positions during his career in both the state and central governments. Known for his administrative experience and operational expertise, he now joins the elite force entrusted with the security of the country’s highest leadership.

“This appointment reflects the confidence reposed in his capabilities and professional record. Serving in the SPG is among the most challenging and prestigious assignments for any police officer,” a senior official said.

The SPG is responsible for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and is widely regarded as one of the most specialized security agencies in the country. Officers selected for leadership roles in the organization undergo rigorous scrutiny and are entrusted with highly sensitive responsibilities.

“An officer from the Gujarat cadre being elevated to an ADG-level position in the SPG is a proud moment for the state’s policing system,” another official noted. Bhagat’s appointment underscores the growing recognition of Gujarat cadre officers at the national level and further strengthens the state’s presence in key security and administrative institutions across the country.
