GANDHINAGAR : Gujarat is preparing to turn the traditional craftsmanship of its tribal heartland into a global business opportunity. In a move that could redefine rural industrial development, Chhota Udepur district is being positioned as a future hub for sports equipment manufacturing, combining indigenous bamboo-based skills with modern technology, sustainable production practices, and international market demand.

The ambitious vision will take centre stage at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) Central Gujarat 2026, scheduled to be held on June 29 and 30 at GSFC University in Vadodara. The proposed Sports Equipment Manufacturing Hub is expected to be presented as a major investment opportunity capable of generating employment, fostering tribal entrepreneurship, and strengthening Gujarat’s growing sports economy.

“This initiative is about much more than manufacturing. It is about empowering tribal communities, creating local livelihoods, and connecting traditional skills with global markets,” a senior official associated with the project said.

For decades, Chhota Udepur has been known for its bamboo handicrafts, woodwork, and artisanal traditions. The new model seeks to leverage these strengths by producing eco-friendly sports goods, including training equipment, cricket accessories, outdoor sports products, and other sustainable sporting materials. The district’s rich bamboo resources and skilled artisan base are being viewed as key assets in developing a competitive manufacturing ecosystem.

Officials believe the project aligns with a rapidly expanding global demand for environmentally responsible products. Bamboo-based materials, recyclable components, and lightweight designs are increasingly becoming preferred choices in the sports industry, creating a significant opportunity for districts with natural resource advantages.

“Chhota Udepur has the potential to become a model where sustainable manufacturing and cultural branding work together to create economic growth,” an industry expert noted.

The benefits are expected to extend beyond factories. Local youth, women, artisans, self-help groups, and small enterprises are likely to participate across the value chain—from raw material sourcing and production to packaging, branding, and marketing. Plans also envision the development of sports research centres, training institutes, sports tourism zones, and green manufacturing units.

The initiative complements Gujarat’s broader push to emerge as a sporting powerhouse. With substantial investments in sports infrastructure, athlete development, and preparations linked to hosting major international events, the state is increasingly viewing sports as a driver of economic growth.
