Ahmedabad : Ahmedabad witnessed a tragic case of drug abuse when 18-year-old Prince Sharma from Vatwa succumbed to a drug overdose. The incident occurred in Isanpur, where Sharma collapsed in a local garden while reportedly indulging in a drug binge with friends. He was rushed to LG Hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Initial reports from the medical team indicated drug addiction as the likely cause, prompting police intervention.

The Isanpur police have launched a thorough investigation, with the victim’s body sent for post-mortem to confirm the exact cause of death. Authorities suspect foul play, as a close friend allegedly administered drugs to Prince. Adding to the gravity of the situation, police arrested a compounder who is believed to be at the center of a widespread drug distribution network.

A Compounder’s Shocking Role

Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested compounder had been supplying drugs to nearly 200 youths daily. He reportedly administered injections, enabling widespread drug abuse among the local youth. Police are examining his role as the possible mastermind behind this drug racket. The post-mortem report has confirmed drug use as the cause of Prince’s death, shedding light on the dire consequences of substance abuse.

Broader Drug Crackdown in Gujarat

The incident comes as Gujarat Police intensify efforts to combat drug addiction and trafficking. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghvi, has spearheaded initiatives to curb youth involvement in drugs. In Surat, police have established a counseling center at Vesu Police Station, aimed at rehabilitating young drug users. Families and friends are encouraged to report cases of drug addiction, with the police offering counseling and support to help individuals break free from addiction.

This proactive approach complements ongoing police operations against drug peddlers across Gujarat. Ahmedabad and Surat have emerged as hotspots for drug-related incidents, with authorities conducting raids and seizing significant quantities of illegal substances. Coastal areas in Gujarat, particularly Kutch, serve as critical entry points for narcotics smuggled from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Nepal.

The Drug Trafficking Network

Drugs entering Gujarat often follow complex smuggling routes, including the Punjab border, coastal areas, and neighboring countries like Nepal. Afghan heroin, shipped via sea routes, forms a significant portion of the narcotics trafficked into India. These routes, particularly the Kutch coastline, play a pivotal role in the drug trade. Gujarat Police remain vigilant, cracking down on unlicensed drugs and arresting offenders to protect the state’s youth.
