Ahmedabad, Gujarat — Gujarat has emerged as a national leader in solar energy adoption, achieving and surpassing its target of installing 3.05 lakh rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana well ahead of the financial year 2024-25 deadline. According to the latest data released by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), the state has installed 3.36 lakh rooftop solar systems as of May 11, 2025—the highest in India under this scheme.
Launched in February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to promote solar adoption among homeowners by offering up to 300 units of free electricity per month and a central subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for installations up to 3 kW capacity. In Gujarat alone, over 3.03 lakh households have received ₹2,362 crore in subsidies from the Central Government so far.
Gujarat Contributes 34% of India’s Total Rooftop Installations
Thanks to its swift and efficient implementation, Gujarat accounts for 34% of all solar rooftop panel installations in India, outpacing larger states in terms of numbers and speed. Maharashtra ranks second with 1.89 lakh installations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1.22 lakh, Kerala with 95,000, and Rajasthan with 43,000.
Massive Energy Savings and Environmental Gains
The solar panels installed under this scheme in Gujarat have already generated over 1,232 MW of energy, equivalent to 1,834 million units of conventional electricity. Had this power been generated using coal, it would have required 1,284 metric tonnes of coal, resulting in 1,504 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The solar transition has thus brought significant environmental benefits by reducing dependency on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.
What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
The PM Surya Ghar scheme allows any homeowner with a roof to apply for subsidized rooftop solar installation. Applicants can register online at pmsuryaghar.gov.in, and once approved, enjoy both free electricity up to 300 units and financial savings on power bills. The scheme aims to make solar energy accessible and affordable while supporting India’s renewable energy goals.
Success Driven by Administration and Public Participation
Gujarat’s success in this nationwide initiative is being attributed to strong administrative coordination, awareness campaigns, and grassroots-level public engagement. From urban homes to rural villages, the government’s efforts to simplify the application process and educate the masses on the benefits of solar power have significantly boosted adoption.
“Gujarat has proven once again that with proper planning and public cooperation, large-scale renewable energy adoption is not only possible but also efficient,” said a senior GUVNL official. “Our model shows how a state can lead the nation in sustainability by prioritizing both policy and people.”
Gujarat as a National Model for Renewable Energy
With its robust strategy and continued support from the Central Government, Gujarat is now being hailed as a model state for renewable energy implementation in India. The solar success story reflects not just an energy transition, but also a societal one—where sustainability, savings, and self-reliance go hand in hand.
