Gandhinagar, Gujarat – Gujarat is not just a state; it’s a pharmaceutical powerhouse. From sprawling manufacturing units to cutting-edge research, the state has firmly established itself as a global leader in drug production and export, playing a pivotal role in providing affordable and quality medicines to the world. This formidable position was further cemented by the resounding success of the pharmaceutical sector at the recent 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.

“Gujarat holds an important position in the world in the field of pharmaceutical production and export,” proudly declared Health Minister Rushikesh Patel. His words resonate with tangible results from the 2024 summit, a testament to the vision set forth by then Chief Minister and now Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, back in 2003.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, the 2024 Vibrant Summit saw a remarkable influx of investment intentions. The health department, guided by Minister Patel, played a crucial role, orchestrating the signing of 376 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) related to the pharmaceutical sector, collectively valued at an astonishing ₹30,000 crore.

What’s truly inspiring is the speed at which these intentions are transforming into reality. To date, 175 of these MoUs have already been successfully commissioned, creating a ripple effect of progress and opportunity on the ground. Another 153 projects are rapidly nearing completion, painting a vibrant picture of an industry in full bloom.

This proactive approach has resulted in a substantial investment of ₹11,114.13 crore flowing into Gujarat’s pharmaceutical landscape, a direct infusion that has created over 20,141 employment opportunities. This isn’t just about economic numbers; it’s about real people finding meaningful work and contributing to a healthier global community.

Among the pioneering ventures commissioned in 2024 are significant international collaborations. Spain’s Senador Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. has made a colossal investment of ₹2,500 crore, establishing what will be the world’s largest facility for manufacturing contraceptive drugs, providing jobs to 500 individuals. From across the Atlantic, America’s Amneil Pharmaceutical Pvt. Ltd. has channeled ₹700 crore into injectable drug production, also creating 500 jobs. Japan’s Sysmax India Pvt. Ltd. has invested ₹100 crore in medical device manufacturing, while Merrill Group, a Gujarat-based company, has committed ₹910 crore to the same sector, adding 300 more jobs. Vapi-based M. Swati Spentos Pvt. Ltd. has also invested ₹500 crore, generating 300 employment opportunities.

These investments highlight Gujarat’s attractive ecosystem for pharmaceutical manufacturing. The numbers speak for themselves: Gujarat currently accounts for an impressive 33 percent of India’s total pharmaceutical production. This formidable output isn’t just for domestic consumption; medicines crafted in Gujarat are now exported to approximately 200 countries worldwide, cementing India’s reputation as the “pharmacy of the world.” With a staggering 28 percent share in India’s total pharmaceutical exports, Gujarat stands at the forefront of this global health mission.

With approximately 5,850 licensed manufacturers operating within its borders, Gujarat’s pharmaceutical landscape is diverse, encompassing allopathic, ayurvedic, homeopathic medicines, as well as cutting-edge medical devices and cosmetics. This comprehensive approach ensures that Gujarat continues to lead the charge in healthcare innovation and accessibility, touching lives not just across India, but around the globe.
