Gandhinagar | Gujarat —  Digital payments are rapidly transforming passenger experience and revenue streams for the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), with nearly 30 percent of its daily earnings now coming through cashless modes.

Manish Ghanchi, a resident of Ahmedabad, recently boarded a GSRTC premium bus to Vadodara. Instead of worrying about cash or change, he simply scanned a QR code generated instantly by the conductor to pay for his ticket.

“This is a remarkable initiative by GSRTC. It’s extremely convenient for passengers like me who regularly use digital payment methods,” Ghanchi said.

Across the state, thousands of passengers no longer need to carry cash while travelling. GSRTC now enables ticket payments through multiple digital options, including UPI, debit cards, credit cards, and mobile-based online payments—even for onboard ticket bookings.

The growing adoption of digital transactions has significantly boosted GSRTC’s efficiency and transparency. With a fleet of over 8,000 buses and increasing use of mobile app bookings, the corporation is witnessing a clear shift towards faster, simpler, and more user-friendly services. This aligns with the state government’s broader push for digital governance under Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has also stressed expanding bus connectivity to remote areas while strengthening digital infrastructure to enhance passenger convenience and increase daily ridership.

“On average, GSRTC serves around 27 lakh passengers daily, generating approximately Rs 12 crore in revenue. Of this, nearly 30 percent now comes through digital payment modes. Daily digital collections have more than doubled—from around Rs 1 crore last year to over Rs 2 crore currently—and continue to grow steadily. We are moving towards a cashless economy, and this move is part of the larger aim of increasing the digital ecosystem,” Deputy Chief Minister Shri Harsh Sanghvi said.

“Passengers can make digital payments through online platforms, the mobile app, and onboard ticketing machines. We have also digitised student pass payments, which is contributing to the rise in digital revenue,” a GSRTC official said.

Looking ahead, GSRTC aims to further scale up cashless transactions. “We plan to increase the share of digital payments to 60–70 percent in the coming months by extending these facilities to commercial services and passenger pass systems as well,” the official added.

Notably, around 85 percent of digital transactions in GSRTC are conducted via UPI, highlighting its widespread adoption across Gujarat.
