Google has rolled out a new update for Google Maps on Android Auto, introducing larger and more visible street labels aimed at improving in-car navigation clarity.
The update is part of the broader Immersive Navigation redesign and focuses on making it easier for drivers to quickly identify roads while following directions. With the new design, streets that are part of the active route are highlighted in blue with a white outline, while nearby roads appear in grey with similar outlining for contrast.
The feature is designed to enhance driving experience by reducing confusion and improving readability on vehicle displays, especially during active navigation.
However, the update has a limitation. The enlarged street labels only appear when navigation is active. If users are simply viewing the map without starting a route, the enhanced labeling is not visible, which may reduce situational awareness of surrounding roads.
The change has been spotted in Google Maps version 26.17.03 and Android Auto version 16.7.661604, indicating a gradual rollout across devices.
The update reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to refine in-car navigation usability and improve visual clarity for drivers using its mapping platform.
