Google Drive gets smarter with Ask Gemini and AI Overviews

Google is upgrading its cloud storage platform with powerful AI features, introducing Ask Gemini and AI Overviews to improve how users search, understand, and interact with their files. These features are currently rolling out to eligible Google Workspace and Google AI plan users.

New AI tools enhance productivity

With Ask Gemini integrated into Google Drive, users can now have dedicated conversations with AI about their files and folders. This allows more accurate answers based on the actual content stored in Drive, making it easier to find information and stay focused on tasks.

Users can ask questions about specific documents, folders, or entire projects, and the AI responds with context-aware insights. Importantly, these conversations are saved, so users can return and continue later without losing progress.

Better organization with Drive projects

Google is also improving file organization through Drive projects, which allow users to group related files and folders into a single workspace. This helps teams manage complex workflows and stay aligned.

Ask Gemini works within these projects, offering insights without copying or duplicating any files.

AI Overviews simplify search

Another major addition is AI Overviews, which provide instant answers at the top of search results. Instead of opening multiple files, users can get quick summaries or direct answers to their queries.

For example, users can ask questions like “What’s in our Spring 2026 catalog?” and receive a clear response. The AI understands intent and adjusts responses whether the user needs a quick summary, detailed explanation, or list of documents.

Users can also expand answers into deeper conversations with a single click, making research and navigation faster.

Rollout details

Both Ask Gemini and AI Overviews began rolling out in English starting April 22. Google notes that it may take up to 15 days for the features to reach all eligible users.

These updates reflect Google’s continued push to integrate AI into everyday tools, making Google Drive more intelligent and efficient for both individuals and teams.
