Ankleshwar : The Panoli GIDC in Ankleshwar was on high alert after a gas leak at a pharmaceutical firm on Monday. The incident occurred at VVIC Pharma’s Panoli GIDC facility in Ankleshwar, where a gas leakage was found. There was fear outside the plant as the gas leak created a heavy yellow cloud in the air.

Primary information revealed that there was a leak of nitric acid gas from the pharmaceutical company during the operational procedure. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has launched a probe. However, there have been no reports of casualties in the entire affair.

When the event was reported, workers fled the company, and the fire brigade rushed to the spot. This company makes medicines, and there was a gas leak, which has prompted the GPCB to launch an investigation. If negligence is discovered, the company’s owners will face severe consequences. The employees of the organization breathed a sigh of relief because no one was wounded.

Gujarat has witnessed a number of gas leak incidents over the years, particularly in its industrial hubs like Ankleshwar, Bharuch, and Vapi. These regions are home to chemical, pharmaceutical, and other hazardous material processing plants, making them susceptible to such incidents. While some leaks are contained swiftly, others have resulted in casualties and environmental damage, raising concerns about safety standards and regulatory oversight.

One of the most notable areas is the Panoli GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) in Ankleshwar, known for its concentration of chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Gas leaks in this region are not uncommon, and local authorities are frequently on high alert. Many incidents involve harmful gases like nitric acid, which pose severe risks to both workers and nearby residents.

For instance, in February 2024, a tragic incident in Muli taluka, Surendranagar district, occurred when three laborers perished due to a gas leak caused by illegal mining with gelatin bombs. The workers were digging an illegal hole to extract minerals, and the mishap highlighted the lack of safety precautions and oversight in hazardous work environments.

In addition to Ankleshwar and Surendranagar, industrial zones in Bharuch have also experienced similar tragedies. Over the years, several workers have lost their lives in these industrial corridors due to toxic gas emissions, often linked to poor maintenance, negligence, or failure to follow proper safety protocols.

These recurring incidents have drawn attention to the need for stricter regulations and better safety protocols. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) plays a critical role in monitoring environmental safety, launching investigations whenever such incidents occur. However, despite these efforts, the frequent gas leaks indicate that there is still much to be done in terms of industrial safety management.

Public outcry and worker protests have followed many of these incidents, with demands for improved safety measures, better protective equipment, and accountability from company owners. Many argue that unless companies are held accountable and stronger penalties are enforced, the safety of workers and surrounding communities will continue to be at risk.
