Surat : Move over, diamonds and textiles, Surat is about to shine with a new gem: semiconductors. Suchi Semicon Private Limited, a Surat-based Assembly, Test, Marking and Packing (ATMP) service provider, has announced a monumental Rs 870 crore investment to establish India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in the “Diamond City.” This bold move marks a significant leap for Surat, propelling it from a textile hub to a potential leader in the high-tech world of silicon wafers.

Ashok Mehta, founder of Suchi Semicon and a veteran in the Surat textile industry, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat Government in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, solidifying this historic project on December 20. Mehta, known for his leading textile company Suchi Industries Limited, brings his entrepreneurial prowess and vision to this groundbreaking venture.

“We are the first indigenous semiconductor manufacturer in India, right here in Surat,” declared Mehta with unwavering ambition. “Our vision is to become a global leader in semiconductor assembly, providing high-quality solutions that drive innovation, empower technology advancements, and enable our customers to create cutting-edge products that improve the world.”

Driven by the vision to position Gujarat as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) and Semiconductor production, Gujarat has taken pioneering steps by introducing distinctive policies for Electronics Manufacturing (2022-28) and Semiconductor Manufacturing (2022-27) – becoming the first state in India to do so, aligning with the India Semiconductor Mission.

Highlighting the venture’s global appeal, Mehta revealed, “Our expertise has already garnered interest from international markets like the USA and Singapore, with commitments for approximately 1 lakh units per day across various packages and devices.”

The Surat plant’s focus on a Class10 cleanroom, ESD compliance, and ROHs underscores its commitment to precision. The manufacturing process, involving encapsulating Silicon die with meticulous precision, demands sophisticated, fully automated equipment and a controlled environment to consistently deliver top-tier performance.

Mehta emphasized the project’s socio-economic impact, stating, “The semiconductor plant is estimated to generate 1,200 employment opportunities, marking a significant milestone in Surat’s industrial landscape.” Operations are slated to commence in 2024, marking a new chapter in Surat’s journey toward technological innovation and global prominence.
