Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 26: At 33, Kirsten Varela stepped onto the world stage for the first time as a competitive calisthenics athlete, representing India and Elysium Calisthenics Park at the World Street Workout and Calisthenics Federation (WSWCF) World Championship in Riga, Latvia. The championship brought together more than 200 athletes from 52 countries, competing across three disciplines — freestyle, endurance and power. Kirsten Varela was the only Indian athlete at the championship, competing in the freestyle category, where athletes are tested on strength, control and creativity. “My goal was never just to compete, but to win the Calisthenics World Championship,” says Kirsten Varela. Kirsten’s journey was remarkable not only because of the ambition, but also because of the preparation time. He began dedicated preparation for the championship just three months before the competition. In a sport that demands years of strength development, technical skill and precision, Kirsten took on the challenge of preparing for the world’s biggest stage in a remarkably short period. Kirsten Varela not only progressed through the rounds but reached the final, becoming the first Indian athlete to reach the final of a calisthenics competition on the world stage. The final took place on August 15, 2026 — India’s Independence Day — adding an even deeper significance to an already historic moment. Kirsten faced athletes representing France, Greece and Egypt, carrying the Indian flag and the hopes of people watching from home. Kirsten Varela ultimately fell short of the championship title. However, losing the final did little to diminish what had already been accomplished. In his first-ever calisthenics championship, Kirsten Varela had reached a stage no Indian athlete had reached before. “I may have lost the final, but I won the hearts of the people watching from home, especially Indians who were supporting me,” says Varela. For Kirsten, the journey to Riga was never simply about participation. It was about testing himself against the world’s best, representing India with pride and proving that Indian athletes can compete at the highest level of international calisthenics. The championship may not have ended with the title Kirsten had set out to win, but it marked the beginning of a new chapter. Kirsten Varela now returns from Riga more determined than ever to take things one step further — and become the Calisthenics World Champion.
