Surat : In a bold move, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) demolished a significant portion of the illegal farmhouse belonging to former BJP MLA Zankhana Patel, located within the road alignment of Town Planning (TP) Scheme 78 in Dumas near Surat. The demolition, which took place on Tuesday morning, marks a turning point in the history of the controversial property.

Zankhana Patel, who formerly represented the Choriyasi assembly constituency from the BJP, had allegedly enjoyed immunity from any demolition actions during her time in power. However, with the change in political landscape and her denial of a ticket in the last assembly election, the SMC seized the opportunity to take action against the unauthorized construction.

Sources reveal that officials from the Athwa zone of the SMC arrived at Zankhana Patel’s farm house, situated on the Dumas to Victoria Farm road, with JCBs and commenced the demolition process. Approximately 50% of the farm house, including the entire kitchen portion, has been demolished in accordance with the law.

The demolition of Zankhana Patel’s farm house has sparked controversy within certain factions of the senior BJP leadership, particularly those close to the former MLA. However, the SMC’s actions stand as a testament to their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that no individual, regardless of their political influence, is exempt from the consequences of illegal constructions.

The demolition serves as a reminder that encroachments on public land will not be tolerated, regardless of one’s political background. The SMC’s firm stance on enforcing town planning regulations demonstrates their dedication to maintaining the integrity of the city’s infrastructure.

As news of the demolition spread, residents of Surat expressed mixed reactions. Some applauded the SMC for taking action against illegal constructions, emphasizing the need for equal treatment under the law. Others voiced concerns about the potential political ramifications and the implications for the BJP’s internal dynamics.

Zankhana Patel, in response to the demolition, refrained from making any public statements. However, sources close to her indicate that she intends to address the matter legally through the appropriate channels.

The demolition of Zankhana Patel’s farm house marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb illegal constructions and encroachments in Surat. It sends a clear message that no individual is above the law and reinforces the SMC’s commitment to maintaining the city’s urban planning standards.

The Surat Municipal Corporation’s action against the former MLA’s property serves as a deterrent to others who may attempt to flout regulations. It underscores the importance of adhering to town planning guidelines and upholding the principles of fair governance in the interest of the city’s overall development.
