Gandhinagar | Gujarat — The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to initiate a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Gujarat after Diwali to identify and eliminate duplicate and illegal voters. Following the exercise in Bihar, Gujarat will be among the first states to undergo a large-scale verification drive, according to sources in the Election Department.

The official announcement regarding the voter list revision is expected to be made by the ECI on Monday at a press conference in Delhi.

Door-to-door Verification and Booth Officer Deployment

Under the Special Intensive Revision, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification across all assembly constituencies in the state. The objective is to remove duplicate voters, identify illegal settlements, and add eligible new voters to ensure a transparent and updated electoral roll.

Training sessions for officers involved in the process have already begun. Authorities have been instructed to ensure error-free voter rolls before the 2026 local body elections.

Congress Flags 62 Lakh Suspicious Voters

Meanwhile, the Congress has raised serious concerns about inaccuracies in the existing voter list. The party claims that over 62 lakh voters in Gujarat are under suspicion, with nearly 30,000 ghost voters reportedly found across 84 assembly seats.

Opposition leaders have demanded a transparent review and independent monitoring of the revision exercise to ensure fairness and accuracy.

Nationwide Rollout Expected

According to sources, the Election Commission plans to extend the Special Intensive Revision to 10–15 other states, making it a nationwide campaign to strengthen the credibility of India’s electoral system.

Once completed, the updated voter list will form the basis for future elections, ensuring that only genuine voters participate in the democratic process.
