Surat | Gujarat — As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Surat on June 5, a detailed representation highlighting several long-pending public issues was submitted by social activist Darshan Naik, demanding urgent intervention on matters ranging from employment and infrastructure to environmental protection and aviation safety.
The representation stated that many concerns raised during the Prime Minister’s South Gujarat visit in March had remained unresolved. It was urged that immediate policy and administrative action be initiated to address issues affecting the citizens and youth of Surat district.
A major concern raised was the alleged neglect of local youth in recruitment by industries operating in Hazira. It was pointed out that substantial government support, including land allotments, tax benefits and infrastructure assistance, had been extended to major industrial projects in the region. Despite this, permanent employment opportunities were allegedly not being provided to qualified local candidates.
“Government policies prioritising local employment must be implemented effectively so that qualified youth from Hazira and surrounding areas are not left behind,” Naik stated in the memorandum.
Serious concerns were also raised over the long-pending establishment of the Surat Railway Division. Despite assurances made over a decade ago, the division has not yet been operationalised. The appointment of a railway officer at Surat station and improved passenger facilities were sought.
Environmental issues were prominently highlighted, with immediate action being demanded against alleged encroachments and pollution in the Tapi and Mindhola rivers. A joint committee involving the Centre, state government and local bodies was proposed for river restoration.
The strongest concerns were expressed regarding the safety of Surat International Airport. It was alleged that runway obstacles, incomplete safety infrastructure and delays in implementing CAT-I and ILS navigation systems could compromise passenger safety.
“The lives of passengers cannot be put at risk. A comprehensive safety audit and immediate corrective measures are essential,” Naik said.
The memorandum also sought international connectivity upgrades, including the inclusion of Surat in bilateral air service agreements to attract foreign airlines.
