Ahmedabad | Gujarat — A major political controversy has erupted ahead of Gujarat’s upcoming local self-government elections after the state Congress alleged that individuals with criminal backgrounds could now be appointed as polling agents. The party has formally written to the Gujarat State Election Commission, demanding immediate withdrawal of the alleged circular and warning that the credibility of the electoral process is at stake.
In a written submission, Gujarat Congress President Amit Chavda and Vice President Hemang Vasavada claimed that recent administrative changes to eligibility criteria have opened the door for individuals with criminal records to be appointed as polling agents.
“Threat to Free and Fair Elections”
Polling agents play a crucial role in ensuring transparency at polling booths, acting as official representatives of candidates when they cannot be physically present at every station. Congress leaders warned that allowing persons with criminal backgrounds into this role could create fear and intimidation during voting.
“Democracy survives only when elections are conducted in a free, fair and fearless manner,” the party said in its submission. “Allowing individuals with criminal history to act as polling agents will introduce ‘bahubali’ elements into the election process.”
The leaders alleged that such appointments could create an atmosphere of pressure not only for polling officials but also for agents of opposition parties.
Demand to Withdraw Circular Before Polls
The Congress has urged the election body to revoke the circular before local body polls covering panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations. According to the party, failure to act could lead to the elections being viewed as “unfair and undemocratic.”
“This circular must be withdrawn immediately before elections are held,” the leaders said, warning of statewide protests if the issue is not addressed.
Sharp Political Attack on Ruling Party
The controversy quickly escalated into a political war of words, with the Congress accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of compromising the democratic process.
“Gujarat has been handed over to goons and elections are being rigged,” the party alleged in a strongly worded statement. It further claimed that the ruling party had “surrendered to criminal elements.”
Election Integrity Under Spotlight
The State Election Commission has yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations. However, the controversy has intensified political tensions in the state ahead of the crucial grassroots elections.
