BHAVNAGAR, GUJARAT : The Bhavnagar Diamond Association, along with the Botad and Rammantra Mandir Diamond Associations, observed a bandh on Thursday to protest against charges filed against four individuals, including the president of the Bhavnagar Diamond Association.

The controversy erupted two days ago when the city civic body sealed the Madhavratna Building in the Nirmal Nagar area, citing non-compliance with fire safety standards and the absence of essential life safety instruments. While the main entrance of the building was sealed, the back door remained accessible, allowing traders to continue their business activities. Upon discovering this, the fire department ordered the traders to close their offices, but the directive was not followed.

The situation intensified when the first officer of the fire department lodged a complaint at the Nilambagh police station. The complaint accused four office bearers, including the president of the Bhavnagar Diamond Association, of obstructing government servants from performing their duties. The Madhavratna Building, which houses over 700 offices, had been sealed following several prior notices from the fire department.

In response to the complaint, tensions escalated as the diamond community rallied in support of their leaders. Jewelers from Bhavnagar and surrounding areas organized a rally from Bortalav to Kumdwadi, culminating in a demonstration at the District Collector’s office where they submitted a memorandum. The associations argue that the sealing of the building and the subsequent legal actions were driven by political pressure.

“The civic body’s demand for us to fill a bond to get the building unsealed is unreasonable,” stated a representative of the Bhavnagar Diamond Association. “We believe that this entire action is politically motivated and an attempt to harass the diamond trading community.”

The associations’ protest highlights the deepening rift between the diamond traders and the civic authorities. “Our members are being unfairly targeted and accused,” said another member of the association. “We have always cooperated with safety regulations, but the sealing of the building and the criminal charges are excessive and unjust.”

The Madhavratna Building, a significant hub for diamond trading in the region, had been under scrutiny for its alleged lack of compliance with fire safety regulations. The fire department maintained that the sealing was a necessary step to ensure the safety of the occupants and compliance with the law.

“Safety standards are non-negotiable,” said a spokesperson from the fire department. “The building was sealed after multiple notices were ignored. Our actions are solely based on ensuring public safety and adherence to regulations.”
