Ahmedabad : Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given the green light for projects totaling around Rs 1003 crore to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for the Kharicutt Canal Redevelopment Phase-2 initiative.

In the latest updates, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is set to initiate the redevelopment of the existing canal across several stretches. This includes Stretch-1 from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium, Stretch-2 from Vinjol Wehala to Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall), Stretch-3 from Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall) to Vatva Gam, and finally, Stretch-4 and 5 from Vatva Gam back to S.P. Ring Road.

The project encompasses various components such as the RCC Storm Water Box Structure, road and footpath development, retaining wall, water supply pipeline, irrigation structure, storm water extension, and sewer system, among others.

The Kharicut Canal, built by the Irrigation Department and traversing the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation area, has a remaining length following the completion of Phase-1. This phase extends from S.P. Ring Road through Muthiya village to Naroda Crematorium, as well as from Vinjol Wehala via Ghodasar Awakar Hall to Vatva, returning to S.P. Ring Road. The existing section of the Kharicut Canal is currently accessible.

Furthermore, the ongoing development on either side of the canal, coupled with the expansion of Ahmedabad city over the years, has led to the pollution of the canal water. This is primarily due to the accumulation of solid waste in the canal bed, which presents a significant risk to public health.  In addition to this, challenges related to connectivity are also present in the TP areas on either side of the Kharikat Canal.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has assigned the responsibility of Kharikat Canal Development to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to ensure a prompt and efficient resolution of these issues.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has successfully finished 80 percent of the canal development work in the initial phase of the Kharicut Canal, which stretches 12.75 kilometers from Naroda Crematorium to Vinjol Wehala.  To date, over Rs. 700 crore has been utilized from the Rs. 1338 crore set aside for Phase-1.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given the green light for the redevelopment of the existing canal across five distinct stretches in Phase-2, covering the remaining length of the Kharicut Canal beyond Phase-1.  The complete funding for the projects in Phase-2 has received approval through the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme.
