Ahmedabad, Gujarat – Ahmedabad police are facing severe criticism for cremating the body of a missing youth without informing his family. The case has now reached the Gujarat High Court after a habeas corpus petition was filed, demanding answers from the authorities over the mishandling of the investigation and the blatant disregard for standard procedures.

The Ahmedabad police is in the docks as serious questions have been raised on the utter negligence of the police department as they cremated the dead body of a youth who went missing in Vejalpur area in Ahmedabad, without conducting proper investigation and informing the family members.

The case has now reached the Gujarat High Court after a habeas corpus petition was filed, demanding answers from the authorities over the mishandling of the investigation and the blatant disregard for standard procedures.

Sources informed that a youth named Chirag went missing on June 23. The deceased’s family had filed a complaint with the Vejalpur police station regarding the youth’s disappearance. It was on June 24, the Vejalpur police found the body of the missing youth near an autorickshaw. After waiting for seven days for his family members to come forward and claim the body, the police cremated his body.

After the habeas corpus petition was filed, the information given by the police to the family was shocking.

The police had informed the family about the death of the missing youth. They (police) informed that the body of the youth was found near Telav. The police had cremated the body of a youth named Chirag after the body found on June 24 and nobody came forward to claim his deadbody.

Now, the family members have raised serious questions on the police as the last rites of the missing youth Chirag were performed without informing the family. The body of the youth was found near his rickshaw. The family was not informed even based on the rickshaw number. Many questions have arisen as to why the family was not informed about the youth and they were informed only when a Habeas Corpus petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court. . The entire matter will be heard in the court on Tuesday.

“How could the police cremate the body of our son without confirming his identity or even informing us? They had all our details. The rickshaw was his. Still, they ignored every sign,” said Chirag’s grieving father, demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the incident.

Murder cases are coming to light in Gujarat in increasing numbers. But there are some such cases which are the subject of police investigation whether it is murder or suicide.

Legal experts have raised serious concerns over the violation of the family’s rights and the possible breach of legal procedures. “This is not only a procedural lapse but also a gross violation of human rights. It raises questions on how unidentified bodies are handled and how missing persons’ complaints are treated in the state,” said a senior criminal lawyer in Ahmedabad.
