Ahmedabad | Gujarat —-High drama unfolded at the Ahmedabad Metro Court on Tuesday when Rohan Soni, a college student accused of killing two youths in a fatal Brezza car accident, was assaulted by the victims’ family members and relatives right outside the court premises.
The incident occurred when police brought Soni to seek his remand in connection with the August 10 crash that killed Ashfaq Ajmeri (22) and Akram Qureshi (35). Both victims were travelling on an Activa moped when they were struck by Soni’s speeding Brezza car near Nehrunagar, causing them to crash into the BRTS railings.
Attack in Court Premises
As police escorted Soni out of the van, more than two dozen people — allegedly the relatives and friends of the deceased — pounced on him, punching and beating him in full public view. Eyewitnesses said the police appeared overwhelmed by the sudden attack. Two constables had to physically grab Soni and sprint towards the courtroom to prevent further harm.
Victims and Accident Details
Both Ashfaq and Akram, residents of Jamalpur, were on their way towards Nehrunagar at around 1:30 am when the accident occurred. The impact of the collision was so severe that Akram died on the spot, while Ashfaq succumbed to injuries at Sola Civil Hospital.
Sources revealed that Soni’s car was decorated with birthday celebration items, raising questions about whether others were in the vehicle at the time. Police also recovered items like a ladies’ belt and buckle from the car.
Accused’s Past Record
This was not Soni’s first brush with the law. He had earlier been booked for overspeeding, using illegal dark film on windows, driving without documents, and past confrontations with police. The current investigation will also examine if alcohol or other substances played a role in the crash.
Public Outrage Over Reckless Driving
The assault reflects growing public anger over repeated cases of reckless driving in Ahmedabad. Many have criticised lenient penalties for traffic violations, claiming they fail to deter such incidents.
Police said they are continuing the investigation, including CCTV analysis and forensic examination of the car, to determine the exact circumstances of the fatal crash.
