AHMEDABAD : Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has successfully completed a rare and high-risk Total Hip Replacement on a patient suffering from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a severe blood disorder that significantly increases the risk of life-threatening bleeding during surgery. The complex procedure has highlighted the growing capabilities of Gujarat’s government healthcare system in delivering advanced and affordable medical treatment.

The surgery was performed by the Department of Orthopaedics through a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists from Haematology, Anaesthesia and the Blood Bank. The patient, Sangeeta Trivedi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, is now recovering well and has regained her ability to walk independently.

Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said the successful operation reflects the Gujarat Government’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare in government hospitals.

“This achievement once again demonstrates that government hospitals are capable of delivering highly complex medical treatment with excellent outcomes,” Dr Joshi said.

According to Professor Dr Piyush Mittal, Sangeeta had been battling ITP for several years. The condition causes a dangerously low platelet count, making even routine surgeries extremely risky due to excessive bleeding.

Adding to her health challenges, prolonged steroid treatment for ITP resulted in Avascular Necrosis (AVN), a condition that severely damaged her hip joint. Doctors said a Total Hip Replacement was the only option to relieve her pain and restore mobility.

“Surgery in patients with ITP is extremely challenging because of the high risk of uncontrolled bleeding. Careful planning and teamwork were essential for the success of this procedure,” Dr Mittal said.

Before reaching Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Sangeeta had approached several private hospitals. She was informed that the surgery would cost between ₹3 lakh and ₹5 lakh, and many hospitals were reluctant to operate because of the high surgical risk.

At Civil Hospital, specialists prepared a detailed treatment plan after consultations with multiple departments.

During the operation, Professor Dr Shakuntala and the Department of Anaesthesia played a crucial role in managing the patient’s condition. Doctors administered five units of platelets, one unit of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), and one unit of Packed Cell Volume (PCV) to minimise the risk of bleeding. The surgery was completed successfully without major complications.

Following the procedure, Sangeeta’s condition remains stable. She is now free from severe hip pain, has started walking independently and is able to perform her daily activities comfortably.

Doctors said the successful surgery not only restored her mobility but also gave her a new lease of life, while reaffirming that advanced and life-saving treatment is increasingly available in Gujarat’s government hospitals.
