Adani Ports Orders Eight Modern Tugs to Boost Maritime Efficiency

Ahmedabad : APSEZ, India’s largest transport utility, has announced plans to acquire eight advanced harbour tugs. These tugs will be built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The project is aligning with the government’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. This move supports local manufacturing and strengthens self-reliance in the maritime sector.

The contract is worth ₹450 crore. The delivery of the tugs will start in December 2026 and continue until May 2028. These new tugs will improve safety and efficiency in Indian port operations.

Commitment to India’s Growth

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO of APSEZ, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. He said, “Procuring from Cochin Shipyard Ltd shows our commitment to boosting India’s maritime infrastructure. By using local manufacturing, we support the Make in India initiative while maintaining global standards of safety and efficiency.”

APSEZ has a history of successful partnerships with Cochin Shipyard. Previously, two 62-tonne bollard pull ASD (Azimuthing Stern Drive) tugs were delivered ahead of schedule and are now operating at Paradeep Port and New Mangalore Port. Currently, three more ASD tugs are under construction. This new order will bring APSEZ’s total fleet of tugs built by Cochin Shipyard to 13, ensuring a modern and reliable port operation.
