Surat : Textile dyeing and printing mills on the Vasta Devdi and Sumul Dairy roads have received attention. Following the BJP’s councillor from Sumul Dairy Road, a senior Congress leader has urged the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to take stricter action against polluting mills that are causing serious health issues among residents.

Darshan Naik, general secretary of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCB), has written to the GPCB and SMC authorities to highlight the plight of tens of thousands of residents living near textile dyeing and printing mills who are suffering from serious health issues on the Vasta Devdi and Sumul Dairy Road.

According to Naik’s letter, residents and elected representatives from the area have made representations to the top authorities, but their requests have yet to be heard by the authorities and the State Government.

According to Naik, the Vasta Devdi and Sumul Dairy Roads are home to over 20 textile dyeing and printing mills that run on coal. The chimneys of these textile mills emit hazardous chemical substances into the air, causing serious health problems for the residents. Many people in the area suffer from breathing problems, asthma, and eye diseases, among other things.

Naik has raised a number of concerns, including whether the textile dyeing and printing mills have Envirnoment Clearance (EC) certification, whether the mills have NOCs from the GPCB, whether they are permitted to operate mills in residential areas, whether the mills have fire NOCs, and whether the mills treat hazardous liquid waste.

“Aside from the serious air pollution, the textile mills pollute the ground water as well as the Tapi river with the discharge of hazardous chemical water through the creeks and channels,” said Darshan Naik, general secretary of the GPCC. I have requested that the appropriate authorities conduct a thorough investigation into this matter. Hundreds of people’s lives in Vasta Devdi and Sumul Dairy Road are at risk.”

“Such polluting mills should be heavily fined, and the funds should be used to improve the cleanliness of the water bodies,” Naik added.
