New Delhi (India) : The shocking incident of an acid attack on a 17-year-old schoolgirl in New Delhi prompted the Delhi Police to serve notice on online retailer Flipkart on Thursday.

Acid is illegal to sell commercially, but the accused, Sachin Arora, had purchased some through an online marketplace.

On her way to school on Wednesday morning, the 17-year-old was attacked with acid near Dwarka Mor. A total of three people have been arrested in connection with this.

After their friendship ended in September of this year, Arora and two others, Harshit Aggarwal a.k.a. Honey, 19, and Virender Singh a.k.a. Sonu, 22, plotted and conspired to throw acid on the girl a few days ago, an official said.

Doctors say the acid attack survivor who is still conscious after being hospitalised in Delhi is in stable condition.

The girl’s neighbourhood is shared by all three of the accused.

Harshit was operating the motorcycle at the time of the accident. A police official has stated that Virender was involved in the criminal conspiracy and therefore aided the accused persons.

Singh planned to mislead investigators by taking Arora’s scooty and cell phone to another location the morning of the incident.

Based on forensic evidence, police say they were able to determine that Arora bought the acid from Flipkart and paid for it using PayTM.

As of Thursday, both Flipkart and Amazon were served with a notice from the Delhi Commission for Women for selling acid through their websites.

Commission investigators have learned that the suspect purchased acid from the website Flipkart. According to the Commission’s investigation, it is possible to purchase illegal acid from major online marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart.

An urgent investigation into the availability of acid on online platforms is warranted, the notice said.
