GPT-6 Astra is here, and OpenAI says its newest model represents a major leap in artificial intelligence. From advanced computer use and software engineering to scientific research, cybersecurity and professional work, GPT-6 Astra is designed to handle complex tasks that previously required significant human involvement.

OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra as its latest flagship intelligence model, describing it as its most intelligent and aligned model to date. The company says Astra combines advances in pre-training, reinforcement learning and alignment to improve reasoning, computer use, browsing, coding and multi-step professional workflows.

The launch has also triggered growing interest around terms such as ChatGPT Astra, ChatGPT 6 Astra, GPT Astra 6 and Astra GPT 6, as users look for information about the new model and how it differs from previous GPT generations.

What Is GPT-6 Astra?

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s newest frontier AI model built for complex, end-to-end work.

Unlike traditional chatbots that primarily respond to prompts, Astra is designed to work across multiple steps and interact with computers, software and digital environments.

OpenAI says the model can conduct research, analyze information, create documents and presentations, work with spreadsheets, build websites, perform software engineering tasks and interact with computer applications.

The model is also designed to understand changing instructions and maintain the broader objective of a task instead of treating every new instruction as an entirely separate request.

This is one reason the ChatGPT 6 Astra name is attracting attention: the model is positioned less as a simple conversational upgrade and more as an AI system capable of completing real-world workflows.

GPT-6 Astra vs GPT-5.6 Sol

OpenAI’s own benchmarks show significant improvements over GPT-5.6 Sol across several categories.

On Agents’ Last Exam, which evaluates complex professional tasks performed in real software, GPT-6 Astra scored 59.3%, compared with 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Sol.

On OSWorld 2.0, Astra achieved a score of 72.6%, compared with 65.7% for GPT-5.6 Sol.

OpenAI also says Astra completed comparable computer-use workloads in substantially less time in its latency simulations.

Benchmark GPT-6 Astra GPT-5.6 Sol
Agents’ Last Exam 59.3% 53.6%
OSWorld 2.0 72.6% 65.7%
Terminal-Bench 4.0 57.9% 37.3%
GPQA Diamond 96.0% 94.6%
ARC-AGI-2 95.0% 92.5%
ARC-AGI-3 99.9% 7.8%
ExploitBench 100% 78.5%

These are OpenAI’s reported evaluation results and should not be interpreted as proof that Astra is universally better at every task. Different benchmarks measure different capabilities and can produce very different results.

ChatGPT Astra: What Can It Actually Do?

The biggest change with ChatGPT Astra is its ability to interact with computers and applications rather than simply generating text.

OpenAI demonstrated Astra performing tasks including:

  • Creating and testing websites
  • Navigating software applications
  • Conducting online research
  • Filling out forms
  • Working with spreadsheets
  • Creating presentations
  • Performing frontend quality assurance
  • Analyzing scientific data
  • Generating plots
  • Installing and testing software
  • Troubleshooting computer problems
  • Completing professional workflows

OpenAI says Astra can also create, host and share websites, web applications and games through Sites in ChatGPT.

This makes the Astra GPT 6 generation particularly important for users who want AI to execute tasks rather than simply provide instructions for completing them.

GPT Astra 6 Is Built for Professional Work

Another major focus of GPT-6 Astra is professional productivity.

OpenAI says Astra can create polished documents, spreadsheets and presentations while following existing templates, formatting requirements and organizational standards.

The model is also trained to identify which information actually matters instead of unnecessarily repeating the entire context.

That could make Astra useful for business analysts, developers, researchers, designers, engineers, marketers and other professionals who regularly work across multiple applications.

OpenAI reported a 95.9% geometric-overlap score on BenchCAD with tools, compared with 83.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol in the comparison shown.

GPT-6 Astra for Coding

Coding is another area where OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra delivers a substantial improvement.

The company describes Astra as its best software-engineering model to date.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, a benchmark covering complex terminal tasks including software engineering, system configuration and data analysis, Astra scored 57.9%, compared with 37.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol.

Astra also introduces improved context preservation in Codex. Instead of relying entirely on aggressive summarization when a long coding session exceeds the context window, Astra can preserve notes and retrieve information from earlier context windows.

For developers, this could be particularly useful during long debugging sessions, large refactors and complex codebase work.

GPT-6 Astra and Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is one of the most significant—and controversial—areas of the GPT-6 Astra launch.

OpenAI says Astra represents a major increase in cyber capabilities and reaches the Critical threshold under its Preparedness Framework.

In OpenAI’s internal testing, Astra achieved:

  • 100% on ExploitBench
  • 42.4% on ExploitGym
  • 39.0% on ExploitBench using vulnerabilities from June–August 2026
  • 88.0% on SRE-Bench in a single attempt
  • 99.2% on SRE-Bench within four attempts

OpenAI says Astra even discovered and used two previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities during one internal evaluation and that both vulnerabilities were disclosed to their maintainers.

Because these capabilities could also be misused, OpenAI says the production version includes additional safeguards and restrictions on advanced cybersecurity requests.

GPT-6 Astra and Scientific Research

GPT-6 Astra is also aimed at scientific and mathematical research.

On GPQA Diamond, Astra scored 96.0% in OpenAI’s comparison.

On FrontierMath Tier 4, OpenAI reports a 97.6% score, while Astra achieved 64.6% on Terminal-Bench Science 0.1.

The model can combine reasoning with computer use, allowing it to work with specialized scientific software, inspect datasets and visualize results.

OpenAI also says Astra contributed to mathematical research involving prime gaps, with the company sharing proof materials and verification information alongside the announcement.

Is GPT-6 Astra AGI?

The launch has also revived the debate around Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

OpenAI executives have suggested that GPT-6 Astra could represent a major step toward the AGI era, while the exact definition of AGI remains disputed.

Importantly, benchmark scores alone do not establish that an AI system has achieved AGI.

Astra is clearly designed to perform a broader range of computer-based and professional tasks than earlier models, but whether that constitutes AGI depends on how the term is defined.

GPT-6 Astra Alignment and Safety

OpenAI is also emphasizing alignment as a major part of the Astra release.

The company says Astra is more likely to remain within the boundaries specified by users and environments.

In one internal evaluation, OpenAI reported that Astra did not attempt to circumvent an Auto-Review denial, even when the configuration was deliberately made difficult to work around.

OpenAI also reported substantially lower rates of capability hallucination compared with GPT-5.6 Sol.

However, the company acknowledges that Astra’s stronger capabilities create new safety challenges, particularly in cybersecurity and autonomous computer use.

Its safety overview says Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability level under the Preparedness Framework.

GPT-6 Astra API Pricing

Developers can access GPT-6 Astra through the OpenAI API using the model identifier gpt-6-astra.

OpenAI lists standard API pricing at:

API usage Price
Input $10 per 1 million tokens
Cached input $1 per 1 million tokens
Cache writes $12.50 per 1 million tokens
Output $50 per 1 million tokens

OpenAI also offers a Fast mode for Astra, designed to provide up to twice the speed of standard processing at twice the standard price.

When Will ChatGPT 6 Astra Be Available?

GPT-6 Astra began rolling out on September 3, 2026.

OpenAI initially made the model available to a limited group of organizations before expanding access. The company says Astra is being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as developers through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.

Pro, Business and Enterprise users also receive access to GPT-6 Astra Pro, according to OpenAI.

Enterprise administrators can control Astra availability for their workspaces.

How to Use ChatGPT Astra

For users searching for ChatGPT Astra or ChatGPT GPT Astra, access depends on the ChatGPT plan and rollout status.

Once available in the model selector, users can choose GPT-6 Astra for tasks requiring advanced reasoning, computer use, research, coding or professional workflows.

Developers can alternatively access the model through the OpenAI API using:

gpt-6-astra

The API version is particularly useful for applications that need programmatic access to Astra’s reasoning and agentic capabilities.

GPT-6 Astra vs Other AI Models

GPT-6 Astra enters a highly competitive AI market alongside models from Anthropic, Google and other AI companies.

OpenAI’s published comparisons show Astra ahead of GPT-5.6 Sol in many of the benchmarks highlighted in its launch announcement, while results against competing models vary depending on the evaluation.

For example, Astra scored 59.3% on Agents’ Last Exam, while Claude Opus 5 scored 55.5% in OpenAI’s comparison. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Astra scored 57.9%, compared with 55.8% for Claude Fable 5.1.

That makes independent testing important as broader access to Astra grows.

What Makes GPT-6 Astra Different?

The biggest difference is not simply that Astra scores higher on benchmarks.

Its larger significance is the combination of reasoning, computer use, coding, browsing and long-running workflows.

Earlier AI models could explain how to complete a task. Astra is increasingly designed to actually perform the task using the available computer environment.

That shift—from AI that answers questions to AI that can execute workflows—is likely to be one of the most important developments in the next phase of ChatGPT.

GPT-6 Astra: Final Verdict

GPT-6 Astra is one of OpenAI’s most ambitious AI releases yet.

With major improvements in computer use, coding, scientific reasoning, cybersecurity and professional workflows, Astra is designed to move ChatGPT beyond conventional question-and-answer interactions.

The model’s benchmark results are impressive, particularly in computer use and coding, while its cybersecurity capabilities have simultaneously forced OpenAI to introduce stronger safeguards.

Whether users call it GPT Astra 6, Astra GPT 6, ChatGPT 6 Astra or simply GPT-6 Astra, the underlying development is the same: OpenAI is pushing toward AI systems that can understand goals, operate software and complete increasingly complicated real-world work.

As access expands, the most important test will no longer be benchmark scores alone. It will be how reliably GPT-6 Astra performs useful tasks for real users—and how safely those increasingly powerful capabilities can be deployed.
