Three Sisters Drown in Khambhat Pond While Playing With Paper Boats

KHAMBHAT :A quiet evening in Shakarpur village turned into unimaginable tragedy after three sisters aged 13, 11 and 8 drowned in a pond in Khambhat taluka of Anand district on August 30. The girls had reportedly gone out to relieve themselves and were later found drowned in deep water while playing with paper boats near the pond.

The victims were identified as the daughters of Ashwinbhai Baraiya, a farm labourer living in Seasonal Phaliya of Shakarpur. When the sisters failed to return home, worried family members launched a search in the surrounding area.

After nearly two hours, paper boats were spotted near the pond, raising fears that the children may have entered the water. A local swimmer, Chirag, was alerted and immediately rushed to the spot.

“As soon as I received the call from their father, I took a tractor and reached the pond. At around 6 pm, I entered the deep water and started searching,” Chirag said.

After an arduous search, he pulled the three girls out of the pond one by one. However, they were found unresponsive. The sisters were rushed to the government hospital in a 108 ambulance, where doctors declared all three dead. Their bodies were subsequently sent for postmortem examination.

The tragedy plunged Shakarpur into mourning. The sight of the three sisters being taken together for cremation left villagers devastated, while grief-stricken parents struggled to come to terms with the loss.

Police personnel reached the pond and hospital after receiving information about the incident. An accidental death case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

The incident has also raised concerns about children’s safety around deep and unguarded water bodies, particularly in rural areas.
