AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad is set for a sweeping digital makeover ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games, with the civic body awarding a ₹240-crore contract to Genesys International Corporation Limited to create a comprehensive GIS database of the city.

The ambitious project will generate a 3D digital map of Ahmedabad, covering land, properties, roads, water networks, sewerage systems and stormwater drainage infrastructure. Around 25 lakh properties will also be geocoded and assigned digital identities.

E-Governance and Electrical and Material Procurement Committee chairman Hitendra Parmar said the initiative would bring critical civic information onto a common digital platform.

“Through GIS mapping, information about land, utilities and citizen services will be available at one place. This will help different municipal departments access accurate information and improve planning and service delivery,” Parmar said.

The project will cover an area of around 625 sq km, with an elevation model prepared using orthophotography. The civic body will establish 40 primary and 200 secondary survey points to improve the accuracy of mapping.

Modern technology will also be deployed for road corridor scanning, panoramic imagery and street-view mapping. Specially equipped vehicles will conduct surveys across the city.

One of the most significant components will be the mapping of underground infrastructure. Existing water, sewerage, stormwater and cable networks will be surveyed, including their location and depth. The information will then be incorporated into the civic body’s central database for use by various departments.

The project will also target property tax administration. Using a dedicated mobile application, approximately 25 lakh properties will be surveyed, geocoded and assigned digital IDs. Officials expect the exercise to help identify properties missing from existing tax records and potentially increase municipal revenue.

The database will be developed in two phases, with nine lakh properties geocoded during the first phase and 16 lakh during the second. The entire project is expected to be completed within two-and-a-half years, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.

Officials said the GIS platform will eventually integrate existing civic services, including property tax, online complaints, water and drainage information, hall bookings, workshops and legal audits, creating a unified digital database for Ahmedabad.
