Since the launch of the original Ray-Ban Stories in 2021, privacy concerns surrounding Meta’s smart glasses have continued to grow. As artificial intelligence has become a bigger part of the glasses, questions about how images, audio and other user data are collected and processed have become even more important.
Here’s a closer look at what Meta can access through its smart glasses and what users can do to limit data collection.
Does Meta automatically see photos and videos captured by the glasses?
One common concern is that every photo or video taken through Ray-Ban Meta glasses is automatically uploaded to Meta. According to Meta, that isn’t how the system works by default.
Photos and videos captured with the glasses generally remain on the user’s device unless the user chooses to share them with Meta or another person.
However, the situation changes if cloud media storage is enabled. With this optional feature turned on, captured media can be uploaded to Meta’s servers and retained for up to 30 days. Some features, including certain voice-controlled sharing functions and autocapture capabilities, require cloud storage to work.
Users can also delete stored media through the Meta AI app. Removing a photo or video from the app’s gallery also removes the corresponding cloud copy.
Meta says it does not use the content of photos and videos captured by users to deliver advertisements or train its AI systems, regardless of whether cloud storage is enabled.
Users can review the relevant setting by opening the Meta AI app and going to:
Settings → Glasses → Glasses privacy → Cloud media
What happens when you use Meta AI?
The privacy implications become more significant when camera-based AI features are used.
For example, if you ask Meta AI about something you’re looking at or use features such as Live AI, the glasses can capture an image of the scene in front of you so the AI can analyze it.
These AI-related captures aren’t necessarily saved to the glasses’ normal camera gallery. However, Meta can store them for processing.
Meta has also acknowledged that third-party contractors may review and label some interactions involving Meta AI. The company says this human review helps improve its AI systems and that measures are used to remove or protect identifying information.
This means users should be careful about what they point the camera toward when using AI features.
For example, using Meta AI while looking at:

- Private messages

- Other sensitive personal information
could create additional privacy concerns.
This is particularly important for people using the glasses’ AI capabilities for accessibility. Are voice commands private?
Voice interactions with Meta AI also involve data collection.
When users speak to the assistant through the glasses, the system can record the interaction and generate a transcript. Meta stores this information and may use machine-learning systems as well as human reviewers to evaluate voice interactions and improve its AI technology.
The ability to prevent this type of cloud storage varies by region. For example, users in the European Union have additional privacy options because of regional data-protection requirements, while users in the United States have fewer options for completely opting out.
There is another issue: false wake-ups.
The glasses can occasionally misinterpret background speech or another sound as the assistant’s wake word. Meta refers to these as “false wakes.” According to the company, recordings and transcripts associated with detected false activations are removed from its systems within a specified period.
Users can nevertheless review and manually delete voice activity collected by Meta.
In the Meta AI app, go to:

From there, users can delete individual recordings or remove the entire collection.
Can someone secretly record people using Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Yes. This is one of the more serious concerns surrounding camera-equipped smart glasses.
Under normal circumstances, the glasses use an LED indicator to signal when the camera is being used. The light flashes when a photograph is captured and blinks during video recording.
Meta has also implemented safeguards intended to prevent users from simply covering the indicator light. If the system detects that the LED has been blocked, camera functionality can be disabled.
However, researchers and users have found ways to circumvent some of these protections. Accessories and physical modifications have been developed that attempt to hide or disable the recording indicator without immediately triggering the glasses’ protective mechanisms.
Some modifications reportedly involve physically damaging or altering the LED itself.
Meta has responded by introducing software protections designed to disable camera functionality when the glasses detect physical tampering with the recording indicator.
The company has also taken action against users who have used modified glasses to record or harass people and posted the resulting footage online.
