SURAT : The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) has expressed concern over the United States’ decision to impose a 10% tariff on imports from India under Section 301, warning that the move could impact the competitiveness of Indian gem and jewellery exports in one of the country’s largest overseas markets.

Reacting to the latest development, GJC Chairman Rajesh Rokde said the new tariff would make Indian jewellery products less price competitive in the US and increase pressure on exporters already dealing with global market challenges.

“The U.S. government’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on imports from India will undoubtedly create challenges for our gem and jewellery exporters. While the rate is lower than that imposed on some other countries, it will still put significant pressure on margins and could dent the industry’s growth trajectory,” Rokde said.

He urged the Government of India to hold early discussions with US authorities to resolve the issue and seek relief or exemptions for the sector.

“Protecting the competitiveness of Indian jewellery exports is vital to sustaining livelihoods and reinforcing India’s position as a trusted global leader in gems and jewellery,” he added.

The US remains one of the most important export destinations for India’s gem and jewellery industry. Industry stakeholders believe a timely diplomatic intervention could help minimise the impact of the new tariff and safeguard export growth.
