New Delhi [India], July 24: A growing number of Indian businesses are registering in new states without renting a single office there. Instead of a lease, a deposit, and months of setup, they are using a virtual office address for GST and company registration. Team Cowork, a Gurugram-based provider, is one of the companies making this the default way to expand.

The company says it now serves more than 15,000 businesses through a network of over 250 locations across 28 states. The proposition is straightforward. A business picks the state it needs an address in, completes documentation, and gets a registered commercial address it can use for GST filings, company registration with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and official correspondence. The address is real, but the office rent isn’t because the business never has to occupy the space.

What makes the address usable is the paperwork behind it. A GST or company registration application has to prove that the address is genuine and available to the applicant. Team Cowork says it provides that full set itself, including the No Objection Certificate, the rental agreement, and address proof such as an electricity bill. Clients do not arrange these separately. The company also says every address in its network is checked for GST and ROC compliance before it is offered, which is how it maintains what it reports as a 99 percent registration approval rate.

Speed is the other selling point. A client selects a location, submits KYC documents including PAN, Aadhaar, and a short video verification, and approves a draft. Team Cowork says a virtual office is typically ready within 72 hours of documents being submitted. Set against the weeks or months a physical lease can take, that is often the difference between entering a market on time and missing the window.

The reach matters as much as the speed. The company’s network runs beyond the metros into tier-2 cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, and Kochi, which is where a lot of new registration demand now sits. Once an address is active, it is meant to work across the government and regulatory portals a business actually files on, from the GST system to MCA company filings, and the same address can carry through to websites, invoices, and letterheads.

Why the address is the real hurdle

The reason all of this exists sits inside the tax law. GST in India is state-specific. Under the CGST Act, a business must register separately in every state where it makes taxable supplies. The PAN stays the same across the country, but each state issues its own GSTIN, and the first two digits of that number are the state code. An additional place of business in a different state cannot run on an existing registration. It needs its own, and that registration needs a valid address in that state.

For years, the only answer was to rent something. A business that needed to register in Maharashtra, Karnataka, or Tamil Nadu took on a lease and a deposit there, often for a state where the owner would never actually sit. A seller shipping into Bengaluru did not need a Bengaluru office, but compliance still asked for an address. That gap between what a business needs and what the rules demand is exactly what the virtual office closes.

The cost difference is hard to ignore. A commercial office in a metro can run from twenty thousand to several lakh rupees a month once rent, deposit, furniture, and utilities are counted. Team Cowork’s plans start at ₹799 a month for a business address and ₹999 a month for GST and business registration support. For a small firm testing a new state, that changes the calculation of whether to expand at all.

Who is using it

The clearest demand comes from e-commerce. Marketplaces such as Amazon (FBA – Fulfillment by amazon), Flipkart, and Meesho require sellers to have a valid GST address in the states they operate from. A seller who wants to hold stock closer to buyers, or register in a state to reach them, needs a compliant address there. A virtual office supplies that without a warehouse lease attached to it.

New businesses are the second group. Most startups need a registered address before they can open a bank account or file for GST at all, and a commercial address carries more weight with banks and clients than a home address does. Freelancers and consultants use it for the same reason, to put a proper business address on invoices, websites, and registrations instead of a residential one.

Then there are established companies moving into new states, where the multi-state logic shows up most plainly. One Team Cowork client, Valley Electrovision Private Limited, has publicly said it has used the service across 17 states for GST registration for more than a year and a half. That is 17 registrations that would once have implied 17 leases, or at least 17 rounds of chasing local property and paperwork.

A different way to grow across India

None of this removes the compliance itself. A business still has to register, still has to file, and still has to meet each state’s requirements. What has changed is the cost and friction of getting the address that makes those registrations possible. The virtual office does not bend the rules. It meets them without the overhead that used to come attached.

That shift is starting to look less like a shortcut and more like standard practice. As more Indian businesses grow through marketplaces, distributed inventory, and multi-state customers rather than a single head office, renting property in every state just to stay compliant is beginning to feel outdated. Companies like Team Cowork are betting that expansion in India will increasingly run on compliant addresses, not on empty offices. For a founder weighing a new state, that is worth understanding before signing the next lease.
