SURAT :  In a major boost for India’s textile innovation ecosystem, global apparel giant Levi’s has proposed a research and development (R&D) partnership with Surat-based Man-Made Textile Research Association (MANTRA) to develop its next generation of non-denim apparel. The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen Levi’s premium range of knitted T-shirts and woven shirts by leveraging Surat’s globally recognised expertise in man-made fibre (MMF) technology.

The proposal follows discussions between the two organisations during Bharat Tex 2026, after which Suresh Kumar, Head of Product Development at Levi Strauss India Pvt. Ltd., formally approached MANTRA for technical collaboration.

The partnership aims to combine Levi’s global brand strength with MANTRA’s four decades of research in polyester, viscose, modal, nylon and blended fibres. The collaboration will focus on creating innovative fabrics that offer enhanced comfort, durability and premium quality for Indian and international consumers.

“The demand for man-made and blended fibre garments is growing rapidly. MANTRA’s research capabilities can help create a distinctive and premium non-denim collection,” said Dr.Pankaj Gandhi, director, MANTRA.

MANTRA’s advanced laboratories will support the development of high-performance fabrics with features such as moisture management, anti-wrinkle finishes, superior softness and enhanced fabric strength. The institute will also assist in designing lightweight knitted and woven garments tailored to evolving consumer preferences.

Sustainability will be another key pillar of the collaboration. In line with Levi’s global environmental commitments, MANTRA is expected to contribute technologies such as water-efficient processing, recycled yarn applications and eco-friendly textile finishing, helping reduce the environmental footprint of garment production.

The proposed partnership is also being seen as a landmark opportunity for Surat’s textile sector. Traditionally known as India’s largest synthetic fabric manufacturing hub, Surat is now steadily emerging as a centre for textile research, product innovation and advanced material development.

“This collaboration has the potential to position Surat as a global R&D destination for premium apparel, moving the city’s textile industry higher up the international value chain,” textile industry observers said.

If finalised, the Levi’s-MANTRA partnership would mark another milestone for Make in India, showcasing how Indian research institutions can contribute directly to the product development strategies of leading global fashion brands while enhancing the country’s reputation as a hub for cutting-edge textile innovation.
