VADODARA : India’s push towards sustainable development received a significant boost as leading researchers and academicians concluded that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can transform waste into wealth, with a white paper on AI-driven circular economy solutions set to be prepared following a high-level workshop jointly organised by IIIT Vadodara’s International Campus, Diu, and IIT Roorkee.

The workshop, titled “Impact of Artificial Intelligence for Circular Economy and Sustainable Waste Management,” brought together scientists, academicians, researchers and students to explore how emerging AI technologies can address environmental challenges while promoting responsible resource utilisation.

In the inaugural session, Prof. Dharmendra Singh, Director of IIIT Vadodara, and Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, stressed the importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence with sustainability, innovation and interdisciplinary research to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Artificial Intelligence must be integrated with sustainability and innovation to translate research into practical solutions that benefit society,” the speakers emphasised during the inaugural session.

Experts from leading institutions presented research on AI-enabled technologies for sustainable resource management, showcasing innovations in waste management governance, green manufacturing and circular economy strategies.

The workshop also highlighted how AI and Machine Learning can support carbon sequestration, strengthen ecosystem resilience and accelerate decarbonisation through intelligent energy forecasting, emission monitoring and advanced materials research. Multiple case studies demonstrated the growing role of AI in reducing environmental impact while improving resource efficiency.

A major outcome of the event was the decision to prepare a white paper outlining recommendations and future research directions in AI-driven circular economy practices.

“The key takeaway is the use of AI for transforming waste into wealth,” organisers noted, highlighting the workshop’s focus on practical, technology-driven solutions.
