BHARUCH : The legal and political storm surrounding AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava intensified on Tuesday after a Bharuch court directed the Dediapada legislator to appear in person on July 29 in connection with a case linked to alleged defamatory remarks against the Gujarat Police. The fresh court order comes at a time when Vasava is already serving a seven-year prison sentence in a separate case involving an attack on forest department personnel, placing his political future under growing uncertainty.
The case stems from statements allegedly made by Vasava during a public gathering in July 2024. According to the prosecution, the remarks targeted the Gujarat Police and were not supported by evidence, causing damage to the reputation and credibility of the law enforcement system. The comments triggered legal scrutiny and prompted authorities to initiate action.
Officials said an investigation was conducted following the controversy, and a report was submitted by the then Superintendent of Police of Bharuch district. Based on the findings of that report, a formal criminal complaint was filed before the Bharuch court, setting the stage for the ongoing legal proceedings.
Earlier, the court had directed Vasava to appear on June 23. However, the summons could not be served properly due to administrative reasons. During the latest hearing, District Public Prosecutor Paresh Pandya informed the court about the technical issues related to service of notice and sought further directions.
Accepting the submission, the court invoked provisions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and decided to grant the accused legislator another opportunity to present his side. The previous deadline was cancelled and July 29 was fixed as the new date for his personal appearance.
“The court has ensured that due process is followed while giving the accused adequate opportunity to respond to the allegations,” a source familiar with the proceedings said.
Political observers believe the latest development could have far-reaching consequences. Vasava, who commands significant influence in Gujarat’s tribal belt and enjoys a strong grassroots following, is already battling legal setbacks. With another courtroom battle now unfolding, questions are being raised about the future of his legislative position and political career.
Attention will now shift to July 29, when all eyes will be on whether prison authorities produce Vasava before the court and what defence he chooses to mount against the allegations.
