Android, AI, security, and device updates during The Android Show: I/O 2026 edition ahead of its annual developer conference. From Gemini-powered AI tools and new Googlebook laptops to Android 17 upgrades and improved cross-platform sharing with Apple devices, the company introduced one of its biggest Android ecosystem expansions in recent years.

Google Introduces “Googlebooks”

One of the biggest announcements was a new category of laptops called Googlebooks, designed specifically around Gemini Intelligence features. The company said these devices are built to integrate AI deeply into everyday workflows while maintaining seamless compatibility with Android phones.

Googlebooks will allow users to directly access Android phone files from laptop file managers and improve integration between ChromeOS and Android. The first devices will be manufactured by brands including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with launches expected later this year.

Gemini Intelligence Expands Across Android Ecosystem

also announced Gemini Intelligence, a broader AI-powered assistant system designed to automate tasks and provide proactive assistance across Android devices.

The company demonstrated features such as automatically creating shopping carts from grocery lists, managing reservations, organizing travel details, and generating contextual suggestions using AI.

A new feature called Magic Pointer on Googlebooks uses gesture-based AI assistance by detecting what users point at on the screen and suggesting related actions, such as creating calendar events from emails.

Gemini Intelligence will also support custom AI-generated widgets, autofill assistance, and cross-app integrations while giving users granular privacy controls over how data is shared and processed.

These AI features are expected to roll out first on newer Galaxy devices and Pixel phones.

Gemini Coming to Chrome on Android

Google confirmed that Gemini AI integration is also coming to Chrome on Android devices. Users will be able to summarize webpages, compare information, research topics, and interact with AI directly inside the browser.

The company also introduced AI-powered auto-browsing capabilities that can assist users with tasks like booking parking spots or managing online activities. Some advanced features will initially remain exclusive to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Android 17 Features Revealed

The company previewed several Android 17 features, including a new 3D emoji collection called Noto 3D and an upgraded AI-powered speech-to-text system named Rambler.

Rambler is designed to remove filler words, improve transcription quality, and support multilingual speech input naturally during conversations.

Another major feature, Pause Point, aims to reduce excessive screen time by introducing intentional delays before opening distracting apps and encouraging healthier device usage habits.

Google also announced creator-focused tools such as Screen Reactions, which allows users to record themselves and their screens simultaneously for reaction-style videos and content creation.

Easier iPhone-to-Android Switching

Google revealed that it has partnered with to simplify wireless migration from iPhones to Android devices.

The new system will support transferring passwords, messages, contacts, apps, photos, and even eSIM information wirelessly. Initial support will arrive on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices later this year.

Quick Share is also being expanded with improved compatibility for Apple users through QR-code-based cloud sharing and deeper integration with apps like.

Instagram Editing Tools Coming to Android

and Google announced several Instagram-related improvements for Android users.

Instagram is now fully optimized for Android tablets, while Android devices are gaining enhanced editing capabilities including ultra HDR video, built-in stabilization, night mode support, and AI-powered upscaling tools.

The Instagram Edits app will also receive AI features capable of improving audio quality by separating background noise and music tracks automatically.

Major Android Security Upgrades

Google placed heavy emphasis on security and privacy during the event.

The company announced stronger protections against malware, AI prompt injection attacks, fake banking calls, suspicious app behavior, and unsafe sideloaded apps.

Android 17 will also introduce stricter password protection systems, enhanced Safe Browsing checks, improved live threat detection, and more detailed privacy controls for app location access and contact permissions.

Android Auto and In-Car AI Improvements

Google also unveiled a redesigned Android Auto experience powered by Gemini AI and the Material 3 Expressive design language.

New features include 3D Immersive Navigation in Google Maps, custom Android Auto widgets, Dolby Atmos support, and video streaming support while vehicles are parked.

Gemini AI integration inside Android Auto will allow drivers to perform tasks such as reading messages, finding information across apps, and ordering food using voice commands.

The updates are expected to arrive across supported vehicles from manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Tata, Volvo, Renault, and others later this year.
