The incident occurred on flight 6E657 at Vadodara Airport on Sunday evening, sparking concern among passengers and quickly going viral after a video of the situation surfaced on social media.
25 Minutes of Anxiety Inside Closed Cabin
According to reports, passengers were seated inside the aircraft from around 8:50 pm to 9:15 pm when the power supply abruptly failed. With the AC and cabin lighting switching off simultaneously, the aircraft cabin was plunged into darkness and rising temperatures.
Passengers were seen fanning themselves with newspapers, files and handkerchiefs in a bid to cope with the suffocating heat. One passenger who recorded the incident said, “It became extremely uncomfortable inside the aircraft. People were worried and trying to stay calm while waiting for the issue to be fixed.”
Technical Fault Behind the Incident
Airport officials later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a technical fault in the aircraft’s Ground Power Unit (GPU). The GPU is responsible for supplying power to aircraft systems while the plane is stationary and its engines are switched off.
Without the GPU, critical systems such as cabin lighting, air conditioning and cockpit instruments temporarily stopped functioning.
An airport official explained, “The GPU plays a vital role in maintaining essential onboard systems when the aircraft is on the ground. A sudden shutdown led to the power outage inside the cabin.”
Power Restored, Flight Departs Safely
Airline technicians immediately began troubleshooting the issue and restored power within approximately 25 minutes. Once the AC and lights resumed functioning, passengers expressed relief as the cabin environment returned to normal.
The flight subsequently departed safely for Delhi without further disruption.
