In a country where people often wait, ignore, or hope symptoms will disappear on their own, Dr Reena Yadav is dealing with the reality of what that delay actually costs. As a maxillofacial surgeon and head and neck oncology specialist in Mumbai, her work is not just about performing cancer surgery. It is about confronting a pattern that keeps repeating itself every single day.

Head and neck cancer in India is not uncommon. In fact, it accounts for nearly 30 to 40 percent of all cancer cases in the country, making it one of the most widespread forms of cancer today . Oral cancer in India alone contributes to a massive global burden, with the country accounting for nearly one third of cases worldwide . And yet, awareness remains low, fear remains high, and early detection is still not a priority for most patients.

Dr Reena Yadav has recently operated on complex thyroid tumor cases, but what stands out more than the surgeries is the condition patients arrive in. Most do not come early. They come when the pain becomes unbearable, when the lump in the neck has grown, or when swallowing and speaking are already affected. Symptoms like non healing mouth ulcers, persistent throat pain, change in voice, or difficulty swallowing are often ignored for weeks or even months, even though these are among the most common warning signs of head and neck cancer .

The problem is not just lack of access. It is mindset. Many patients, especially tobacco users, dismiss early signs of oral cancer as minor issues. Tobacco related cancer in India continues to rise, largely driven by habits like gutka, paan, and smoking. The link is clear, but the urgency is missing. By the time they seek a cancer specialist in Mumbai, the disease is often at an advanced stage, making treatment more complex and survival chances lower.

Another harsh reality is the hesitation around cost. Even when affordable cancer treatment in Mumbai is available, patients delay consultations, avoid OPD charges, and sometimes stop treatment midway due to financial stress. There is a growing culture of postponing care, of waiting too long, and then blaming the system when outcomes are not favorable.

Dr Reena Yadav works across hospitals in areas like Mira Road, Dahisar, and Kandivali, where the focus is simple. Good quality healthcare should not be out of reach. Smaller setups with the right equipment and expertise can still deliver effective cancer diagnosis and treatment. But even the best treatment cannot help if patients arrive too late.

Early detection of cancer saves lives. This is not a statement, it is a reality seen every day in operating rooms. When diagnosed early, head and neck cancer treatment becomes more effective, less aggressive, and far more hopeful. A small symptom addressed early can prevent a life altering surgery later.

What Dr Reena Yadav continues to push, through every patient interaction and every case she handles, is a shift in thinking. Fear of cancer surgery, denial, and casual neglect are bigger threats than the disease itself. Awareness is not just about information. It is about action.

Because in cancer, time is not neutral. It either helps you or it works against you.
