New Delhi [India], August 19: A used car buyer should confirm that the insurance is transferred correctly, study the vehicle’s claim history, and separate the seller’s no-claim bonus from the policy being purchased. These checks can prevent ownership mismatches and unclear renewal expectations.

Insurance is often discussed after the price and registration paperwork. That can leave the buyer relying on a policy carrying the seller’s details or benefits that do not belong to the new owner.

Start with the Existing Policy

The current policy shows what protection exists at the time of sale. Read it before continuing the cover.

Check the insured name, registration details, policy period, type of cover, insured value, deductibles, and add-ons. The information should match the vehicle and the seller’s documents.

A policy copy does not prove every benefit will pass to you.

Also confirm whether the policy is close to renewal, because a transfer followed immediately by renewal may require separate paperwork. Written confirmation matters more than an informal promise that the existing cover will continue unchanged after the completed sale.

Treat Insurance Transfer as a Separate Task

Changing the registration certificate does not update insurance records. Track both processes until revised documents are available.

Indian motor law provides for the insurance certificate and policy described in it to be treated as transferred with the vehicle for third-party purposes. Even so, the buyer should contact the insurer, submit the required documents, and obtain an endorsement showing the new owner’s name.

The insurer may request an inspection before confirming own-damage cover, depending on the policy and the circumstances of the sale.

Read the Cover before Accepting It

A transferred policy may not suit how you plan to use the car. Review it before continuing.

The existing car insurance policy may include deductibles or optional covers chosen by the seller. Your driving pattern, parking conditions, repair preferences, and budget may differ.

Ask for a revised schedule. Check that the cover, insured value, and add-ons remain suitable.

Study the Claim History Carefully

Claim history can reveal useful information. Give it the same attention as service records and physical inspection.

Ask whether claims were reported during the seller’s ownership and whether they are closed, pending, or withdrawn. Compare available records with repair invoices and the car’s condition.

A previous claim does not automatically make a vehicle unsuitable. What matters is whether the damage was disclosed, repaired properly, and reflected accurately in the documents.

For an open claim, clarify who will complete the process, what remains pending, and how ownership change affects communication.

Separate Claim History from Personal Benefits

The car’s claim record and the policyholder’s claim-free benefit are different. Confusing them can distort the renewal quotation.

Claim history relates to losses reported against the vehicle during a policy period. A no-claim bonus is generally linked to the eligible policyholder’s own claim-free record, subject to policy terms.

The seller may preserve an eligible bonus for another vehicle by following the insurer’s process. It should not be presented as a discount that automatically stays with the used car.

Understand What Happens to NCB

Check NCB before accepting a transferred policy or fresh quotation. Know whose claim-free history appears in the calculation.

The seller’s NCB remains with the seller rather than passing with the vehicle. A buyer cannot ordinarily use it merely because it appears on the previous policy schedule.

If you have an eligible NCB from an earlier vehicle, ask whether it can be used and what proof is needed. Acceptance depends on the insurer’s process and policy conditions.

After correcting ownership details, request a fresh premium calculation so it does not rely on someone else’s benefit.

Match Insurance and Registration Records

Insurance and registration transfers should move together. Mismatched records can create questions during a claim or renewal.

Official ownership-transfer requirements include a valid insurance certificate among the supporting documents. Buyers should retain acknowledgements and track the registration application.

After receiving revised documents, compare the owner’s name, address, registration number, engine details, and chassis details. Report errors promptly.

Keep a Practical Purchase File

A complete file makes later communication easier.

Keep copies of:

  • The sale agreement and delivery note
  • The old and revised policy schedules
  • Registration-transfer acknowledgements
  • Claim records shared by the seller
  • Inspection or repair documents
  • Correspondence with the insurer
  • Proof relating to any eligible NCB

Keep them until both transfers are reflected.

Ask the Right Questions before Payment

Complete insurance checks before treating the purchase as finished. Confirm whether the policy is active, whether a claim is pending, who owns the NCB, and whether the insurer has accepted the transfer request. Check whether the cover will continue without interruption and whether a fresh inspection is required.

Do not rely on statements that insurance simply comes with the car. Ask for documents showing what has transferred and what still needs action.

Conclusion

A used car purchase is safer when insurance transfer, claim history, and NCB are reviewed as separate matters. The policy should identify the correct owner, previous claims should be understood, and the seller’s personal bonus should not be treated as the buyer’s benefit.

Complete both updates, obtain the revised schedule, and retain supporting records. This gives the buyer a clearer view of the cover and reduces uncertainty at claim or renewal time.
