Surat | Gujarat — A potential aviation disaster was narrowly avoided in Surat on Thursday after a helicopter belonging to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) made an emergency landing following a mid-air technical fault. The incident triggered high alert at Surat International Airport, where emergency teams sprang into action within minutes.
According to airport sources, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) received an emergency call from the pilot at 3:14 pm reporting a sudden hydraulic system malfunction during the flight. Hydraulic issues are considered critical in aviation as they can affect flight control systems and landing gear operations, making the situation particularly serious.
“The moment the emergency call came in, all safety and rescue protocols were activated. Fire tenders, ambulances, and security teams were immediately deployed near the runway,” an airport official said. “Our priority was to ensure a safe and controlled landing without risking any lives.”
As per standard emergency procedures, the runway was cleared and rescue personnel were positioned at strategic points. Tension gripped the airport area as the helicopter approached for landing, with authorities monitoring every movement closely.
Despite the technical challenge, the pilot maintained calm and demonstrated exceptional skill while navigating the aircraft safely. At 3:27 pm—just 13 minutes after the distress call—the helicopter successfully touched down, bringing immense relief to airport authorities and emergency responders.
“The pilot’s presence of mind and coordination with ATC played a crucial role in averting a possible accident,” said a senior aviation official. “This incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and training.”
Fortunately, no passengers or crew members were injured, and there was no damage reported on the ground. After landing, the helicopter was immediately moved for technical inspection by maintenance teams, who have begun a detailed investigation into the hydraulic failure.
Aviation experts note that such incidents, though rare, underline the importance of strict maintenance and rapid response systems. “The quick handling of the situation proves that safety mechanisms at the airport are functioning effectively,” an aviation expert said.
Authorities confirmed that further technical analysis is underway to determine the exact cause of the fault and prevent similar incidents in the future.
