As India’s urban centres grapple with the realities of an ageing population, the conversation around senior care is steadily shifting, from scale-driven, institutional models toward approaches that prioritise dignity, continuity, and emotional well-being. Bengaluru-based Priaashraya Assisted Living stands at the forefront of this transition, offering a boutique assisted-living model shaped by lived caregiving experience rather than commercial intent.

Founded in 2015, Priaashraya was born out of deeply personal journeys. Co-founders Praveen S. N. and Indumathi entered the senior-care space after navigating eldercare needs within their own families. Coming from professional backgrounds in media and communications, they brought with them an uncommon but vital skill set, listening deeply, observing carefully, and understanding human narratives, qualities that became foundational to their philosophy of care.

This philosophy is visible in everyday practice. Indumathi, Co-founder of Priaashraya Assisted Living, is often seen engaging directly with residents during structured activity sessions at the organisation’s boutique assisted-living home in Bengaluru, interactions that reflect the hands-on, relationship-led culture the founders have intentionally nurtured.

A Curated Assisted-Living Model Rooted in Dignity and Continuity

Through firsthand exposure to existing eldercare options, the founders observed a recurring gap: while many facilities addressed physical needs, they often lacked continuity, personal connection, and emotional security. In response, Priaashraya was intentionally designed on a smaller scale, eschewing institutional expansion in favour of home-like environments where seniors are known, understood, and supported as individuals.

Today, Priaashraya operates two boutique assisted-living homes in Bengaluru, catering primarily to seniors aged 75 and above who require daily assistance. Each resident receives a personalised care plan, supported by stable, long-term caregivers who foster trust and familiarity over time. Founder-led involvement ensures accountability, transparency, and continuity, elements often missing in larger setups.

Care models in cosmopolitan urban centres like Bengaluru demand cultural and linguistic sensitivity. Seniors often come from diverse regional and linguistic backgrounds, carrying deeply rooted habits and ways of life. Priaashraya’s homes reflect this diversity, with residents and care teams representing multiple languages and traditions. Daily routines are shaped thoughtfully around individual preferences related to food, faith, communication styles, and social interaction.

Priaashraya has deliberately chosen to operate smaller, closely knit assisted-living homes, typically accommodating no more than 40–50 residents. This intentional scale enables closer supervision, deeper relationships, and a sense of community that feels closer to a family than an institution, allowing seniors to age in an environment that is both secure and familiar.

Praveen has focused on shaping Priaashraya’s care philosophy, systems, and family engagement frameworks, while Indumathi has played a central role in nurturing caregiving culture, resident well-being, and the day-to-day lived experience within the homes.

Practice-Led Learning and a Decade of Evolution

Over nearly a decade of continuous operation, Priaashraya has supported over 200 long-term senior residents, with each journey contributing to an evolving, practice-led understanding of ageing. Beyond residential care, the organisation has begun expanding into structured senior engagement and active-ageing initiatives, reflecting a broader transformation within India’s senior-care ecosystem.

This shift—from custodial supervision to participatory, emotionally enriching models—aligns closely with Priaashraya’s long-held belief that ageing well requires more than medical oversight. It requires community, purpose, and respect.

The approach has resonated strongly with nuclear families and non-resident Indians seeking transparent, end-to-end care solutions for ageing parents who require multi-dimensional support.

As urban Bengaluru continues to search for sustainable, humane alternatives to institutional eldercare, Priaashraya Assisted Living offers a compelling example of what is possible when care is shaped by empathy, experience, and a deep respect for the dignity of later life.
