Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Emerging as the torchbearer of Gujarat’s economic ambitions, Surat is set to host the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (South Gujarat), signaling a decisive push to transform the region into a globally competitive economic powerhouse. The move comes at a time when the city, already known as India’s Diamond and Silk capital, is being positioned at the centre of a bold, future-ready development roadmap.
Organised as part of NITI Aayog’s Growth Hub (G Hub) initiative, the conference aims to bring together policymakers, industry leaders and stakeholders to chart a unified strategy for regional growth. Surat has been identified as a key city-region to pilot an integrated development model that seeks to accelerate economic expansion, reduce regional disparities and enhance competitiveness across interconnected districts.
“Surat represents the perfect blend of heritage and ambition. Its global outlook and industrial strength make it a natural leader for the next phase of Gujarat’s growth,” an official associated with the initiative said.
At the heart of this transformation lies the ambitious Surat Economic Region (SER) Economic Master Plan, which envisions turning South Gujarat — comprising Bharuch, Navsari, Tapi, Dang and Valsad — into a globally competitive economic hub by 2047.
Situated on the banks of the Tapi River, Surat has long been a symbol of resilience and enterprise. Historically a major port city and a thriving centre of trade during the 16th century, it attracted global commercial powers including the British, Portuguese, French and Dutch. Today, that legacy continues in a modern avatar.
The city processes nearly 90% of the world’s natural diamonds and about 25% of lab-grown diamonds, making it an undisputed global leader in diamond cutting and polishing. With around 6,000 units — a majority of them MSMEs — Surat’s diamond industry is both expansive and deeply rooted in skilled craftsmanship.
Parallelly, Surat stands tall as one of Asia’s largest textile hubs, earning its ‘Silk City’ tag through decades of innovation and production excellence. Its robust MSME ecosystem, skilled workforce and business-friendly policies have consistently driven economic growth and employment.
“Surat’s success lies in its ability to convert opportunity into achievement. From infrastructure to industry, the city continues to set benchmarks for others to follow,” an industry leader remarked.
The upcoming conference is expected to further amplify Surat’s strategic importance, reinforcing its role as a gateway for investment, innovation and sustainable development. With improved connectivity, modern urban planning and a strong focus on sustainability, Surat has rapidly evolved into one of India’s fastest-growing and most livable cities.
Officials believe that the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference will act as a catalyst for unlocking new partnerships and investments, strengthening South Gujarat’s position on the global economic map.
