Gandhinagar | Gujarat —– In a major push to transform South Gujarat into a global economic powerhouse, the Gujarat government has approved road infrastructure projects worth ₹1,185 crore aimed at strengthening connectivity across the Surat Economic Region (SER). The projects are part of the state’s long-term vision to develop the region into a world-class trading hub similar to Dubai and Guangzhou in China.
The projects were cleared by Bhupendra Patel, covering 24 road infrastructure works stretching over 383 kilometres across the districts of Surat, Tapi District, Valsad District, Bharuch, Navsari and Dang District.
Officials said the move is designed to strengthen logistics connectivity between industrial clusters, ports and emerging economic centres in the region, helping South Gujarat integrate more effectively with global supply chains.
Key Step Toward SER Master Plan Vision
The infrastructure push comes 17 months after the launch of the Economic Master Plan for the Surat Economic Region, a strategic blueprint prepared by NITI Aayog to transform the city-region into a major growth hub by 2047.
In his message for the master plan report in 2024, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had emphasised the broader vision behind the initiative.
“More than just a blueprint, the Economic Master Plan for the Surat Economic Region is a testament to our dedication to fostering visionary, dynamic and inclusive growth as partners in nation-building,” Patel had stated.
Surat Gets Largest Share of Investment
Among the districts covered under the project, Surat will receive the largest allocation of ₹631 crore, reflecting its role as the main industrial engine of the region.
Valsad has been allotted ₹264 crore, while the remaining funds will be distributed among Navsari, Tapi and Dang districts for road upgrades and connectivity improvements.
Government officials said the investment will significantly enhance transportation efficiency between industrial estates, ports, highways and logistics hubs, reducing travel time and strengthening supply chains.
Industrial Strength Driving the Region
The Surat Economic Region already hosts a strong industrial ecosystem that contributes significantly to Gujarat’s economy.
Surat is globally recognised for its diamond processing and textile manufacturing industries, along with chemical units, MSME clusters and logistics services. Meanwhile, Bharuch has a strong base in chemicals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals, while Navsari is known for agriculture, food processing and small-scale industries.
Tapi district contributes through agro-processing, dairy and paper manufacturing, while Valsad has a mix of chemical industries, trade and tourism businesses. The tribal district of Dang is largely dependent on agriculture, forestry and rural economic activities.
