Gandhinagar | Gujarat —  Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s sudden visit to New Delhi on Monday to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has ignited intense political speculation in state and party circles. Though the Gujarat government has not issued any official statement, insiders suggest that the trip carries significant political and administrative weight.

According to sources, the Chief Minister will hold high-level discussions with the top BJP leadership, and the Delhi visit could set the stage for a major cabinet reshuffle and organizational restructuring in the Gujarat government. The political heat in Gandhinagar has surged as reports indicate that up to 15 ministers — both cabinet and state-level — may be dropped to make way for new faces ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Cabinet Changes and Expansion on the Cards

The three main issues believed to dominate discussions in Delhi are:

Cabinet reshuffle and expansion,

Appointments to key administrative posts, and

Strategic alignment before municipal and local body elections.

Names of senior ministers who may be replaced include Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai, Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, Water Supply Minister Kunwarji Bavaliya, Industries Minister Balwantsinh Rajput, Tourism Minister Mulubhai Bera, and Education Minister Kuber Dindor.

Several Ministers of State, including Purushottam Solanki, Bachubhai Khabar, Mukesh Patel, and Bhikhusinh Parmar, may also be relieved of their duties.

Performance-Based Retention and Promotion

Sources suggest that the reshuffle could follow a performance-based model, retaining only those ministers with proven track records. Health Minister Rishikesh Patel and Industries Minister Balwantsinh Rajput are likely to remain, while Harsh Sanghvi, currently a prominent youth face of the BJP, is expected to be promoted to cabinet rank, although he may not retain the Home portfolio.

Interestingly, Praful Panseria, known for his non-controversial image, could lose his place if Sangeeta Patil is inducted. The reshuffle, analysts believe, will balance regional representation and caste dynamics while injecting fresh energy ahead of crucial elections.

New Faces Likely to Join Cabinet

The inclusion of new leaders is expected to be guided by 2027 electoral strategy and upcoming municipal polls in early 2026. Names doing the rounds include Jayesh Radadiya, Shankar Chaudhary, Uday Kangad, Amit Thakar, Hira Solanki, Mahesh Kaswala, Sandeep Desai, Rivaba Jadeja, and Arjun Modhwadia. The BJP may also consider inducting Alpesh Thakor, Hardik Patel, and C.J. Chavda, all former Congress leaders now in the saffron camp.

Party sources hint that Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will take the final call on the new lineup, ensuring caste balance and grassroots connect, especially among Patidars and OBC communities.

Jagdish Panchal’s Dual Role Adds to Urgency

The appointment of Jagdish Panchal as the new BJP state president on October 3 has added urgency to the reshuffle. Panchal currently holds ministerial portfolios, including Protocol, Cooperative, MSME, and Cottage Industries, and is expected to resign from the Cabinet soon, triggering an imminent expansion.

2027 Elections: The Real Test

The 2027 Assembly elections will serve as a litmus test for the new state leadership. While the BJP remains dominant in urban Gujarat, the Congress retains influence in rural and tribal areas, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is making slow but steady inroads — evident from Gopal Italia’s victory in the Visavadar bypoll.

Political observers say that the BJP is now focusing on reorganizing its leadership structure and strengthening its grassroots machinery to counter the growing opposition presence.
