Ahmedabad | Gujarat — The Gujarat Congress on Saturday escalated the debate on electoral roll irregularities, accusing the ruling BJP of benefiting from “massive voter theft.” State Congress president Amit Chavda held a press conference, claiming that a preliminary review of the Choriyasi Assembly seat under Navsari Lok Sabha constituency – represented by Gujarat BJP chief C. R. Paatil – revealed 30,000 fake voters.
The allegations follow Rahul Gandhi’s 22-page presentation in the Lok Sabha on August 7, which first spotlighted nationwide discrepancies in voter rolls. Since then, the issue of “vote theft” has gained momentum across India, with Gujarat now at the centre of the storm.
“We checked the electoral roll of Navsari, the stronghold of the BJP state president. Shockingly, 30,000 voters turned out to be fake. If such fraud is exposed in just one seat, imagine the scale across Gujarat. This is not an election fight – it is a fight to save democracy,” Chavda declared.
“62 Lakh Voter Thefts Across Gujarat”
Chavda warned that the problem was not limited to one constituency. Citing Gujarat’s 5.06 crore registered voters, he claimed that over 62 lakh fraudulent entries could be unearthed if the rolls were fully scrutinized.
“We can say with 100 percent certainty that at least 12.3% of voters in the lists are fake. This means 62 lakh people’s rights are being stolen. This theft is being done systematically to ensure record-breaking victories for BJP leaders,” he alleged.
According to Chavda, fake voters are inserted into rolls in five ways: duplicate entries, spelling errors, multiple EPIC card numbers for one person, language manipulation, and address changes.
“One person is shown voting twice or thrice. Names are deliberately misspelled or duplicated. These are not mistakes – this is a conspiracy,” he said.
Targeting BJP Strongholds
The Gujarat Congress president specifically accused CR Paatil’s constituency of being ground zero for manipulation. “Wrong voters have turned up in the Lok Sabha seat of the BJP’s state president and even a Union cabinet minister. The question arises: are record-breaking victories a result of record-breaking vote theft?” Chavda asked.
He hinted that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s constituency would also come under scrutiny soon.
“We Will Reach Every House”
To counter the alleged fraud, Chavda announced a statewide campaign to identify fake voters ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
“Every Congress worker will verify the electoral rolls in their area. We will go house to house, expose ghost voters, and present evidence to the Election Commission. This is not just Congress’s fight – it is every Gujarati’s fight for their constitutional rights,” he said.
The party will begin its campaign with a public meeting on voting rights in Ahmedabad on August 31, where leaders and workers will pledge to “expose the thieves of democracy.”
“Not About Winning Elections, But Saving Democracy”
Chavda lashed out at the Election Commission, accusing it of operating under BJP pressure. “Instead of correcting the rolls, the Election Commission asks us to submit affidavits. This is a way to cover up theft. We are not fighting to win seats – we are fighting to protect democracy itself,” he asserted.
He urged citizens to rise above partisan lines: “This is not about Congress versus BJP. This is about whether ordinary Gujaratis will retain their right to vote. The bigger the leader, the bigger the theft. We must expose it before it is too late.”
